A bomb
A minimum of a ten-meter perimeter
A neutron is, uh--The bullet
A nuclear reactor makes electricity with steam
A yearly stipend of 400 rubles
Akimov initiated AZ-5
Akimov- I pressed it... before the explosion
Akimov- They're still up. -Dyatlov- What
Akimov, are we cooling the reactor core
Akimov... -(whispers)- Sasha
All of it... madness
All of you are awarded a bonus of 800 rubles
All we want to know is- who is to blame
An arrogant, unpleasant man,
An RBMK reactor
And
And approximately 750,000 men,
And as for the radiation--Yes, 3.6 roentgen,
And as for what Dyatlov did do,
And content ourselves instead with stories
And cut the phone lines
And do exactly as you have been told
And God knows how many more will die
And how long before this happens
And how many men do you require
And if we line them with lead, they can withstand the radiation
And it is beautiful
And it will not stop. Not in a week, not in a month
And it'll stink like hell. That's it
And no friends
And now Dyatlov will spend the next ten years
And proceed down the hallway for decontamination
And right now, it is on fire
And that's every single hour
And the graphite- -Ah, yes
And then the reactor exploded
And then we drink
And what if there are chemicals
Are the pumps on or not- -Stolyarchuk
Are they bombing
Are you suggesting the core... what
As I presumed, he has no answer
As much vodka as you want, plus a thousand rubles
At least evacuate Pripyat. It's three kilometers away
At least we can keep a man off a roof
Bacho- They eat the chickens
Because I may not know much about nuclear reactors,
Because the flaw will not lead to an explosion
Behind the entrance to the roof and catch your breath
Boris, if we fly... -Don't you use my name!
Boron and sand
Boron control rods
Bryukhanov, the air is glowing
Burning at over 2,000 degrees
But consistent enough to damage our DNA
But I can certainly make them worse
But I know a lot about concrete
But I've been assured there is no problem
But it doesn't look right, the color
But it's in the safe, and we can't find the key
But rather 400 chest X-rays
But the entire industry. -No, no, no, no, no
But understand that even with lead shielding,
By three minutes, you're dead within months
By tomorrow morning, you'll be begging for that bullet
Call in the day shift
Call in the day shift, Comrade Akimov
Can you confirm that the reactor exploded
Can you see inside
Chernobyl Reactor 4 has been held at half power
Climb the stairs but do not immediately proceed to the roof
Commit your task to memory, then do your job
Comrade Perevozschenko, what you're saying is physically impossible
Contain the spread of misinformation
Dead!
Diagnostics complete
Did you lose the signal
Did you lower the control rods or not
Do not look over the rail. Is that clear
Do we stock iodine
Do you have a cigarette
Do you taste metal- -Akimov!
Do you understand your mission as I have described it
Don't worry, we did everything right
Door-to-door
Drop your shovels in the bin,
Dump them in a pit, bury them in concrete
Eight milliroentgen. A leak
Even our lunar rovers won't work on Masha
Even the good we did, all of it..
Every atom of U-235 is like a bullet
Every gram of U-235 holds
Everyone stay calm. Our first priority is-
Exploded
For a minimum of 100 years
Forgive me. Maybe I've just spent too much time in my lab
Forty-eight more tomorrow
Forward one meter, reverse one meter
From absorbing radioactive iodine
From feedwater leaking from a blown tank
From the feedwater, I assume- -Mm-hmm
From there you can look right down into reactor Building 4
Get as far from Minsk as you can
Get down there and make sure those pumps are on
Get him to the medic or the hospital! Whatever he needs!
Get the hydrogen out of the generators and pump water into the core
Get us directly over the building!
Get us over that building, or I'll have you shot!
Give him every bit of protection you have
Good
Good
Good. Yes
Graphite is only found in the core,
Have one of your men get as close to the fire as he can
Have them use the good meter from the safe
He deserves death
He ran the room that night, he gave the orders..
He was the best choice
He'll be fine. I've seen worse
He's in shock. Get him out of here
Healthy, even. But they aren't
Hey! We need to get to the reactor hall
Hour after hour, 20 hours since the explosion,
How do we put it out- -(sighs)
How does a nuclear reactor work?
How many men do you have
How many times do I have to say it
Hundreds of thousands of people are going to get cancer,
I already sent the trainees down to the reactor hall to lower them by hand
I am focusing on the fire
I can't. I am sorry. I'm so sorry
I checked the meter against the control
I did. -You didn't
I don't give a shit about the panel!
I don't have to. Look
I don't know. -(alarms blaring, buzzing)
I don't see how it could explode
I don't think there are control rods
I don't think there's a core
I don't think you should go. It could be dangerous
I dropped the control rods from the other panel
I know about Chernobyl. -Oh
I know how a nuclear reactor works
I know that the core is either partially or completely exposed
I looked into the core
I looked right into it
I need water in my reactor core!
I say we evacuate the town
I sent my dosimetrists into the reactor building
I shut it down. I pressed AZ-5
I still didn't think it could be this flaw in AZ-5
I take it the safety test was a failure
I think it's time we faced--No, we have to get water into the core
I think there's graphite on the ground in the rubble
I tried calling for the electricians
I want you to go to Chernobyl
I want you to think of Yuri Gagarin
I went willingly to an open reactor
I wish you good health and long life
I won't do it. It isn't safe
I'll see it with my own... my own eyes
I'm a nuclear physicist
I'm going to find Khodemchuk in the pump room
I'm going to the Administration Building now
I'm not prepared to explain it at this time
I've been saying that for 25 years
I've been told not to. -Is it or is not-
If I'm right, this fireman was holding the equivalent
If it's more complicated than a light switch,
If there's graphite on the ground outside,
If these worked, you'd be wearing them
If we can't cover it, that's 12,000 roentgen
If you fly directly over that core, I promise you,
Impact means completely uninhabitable
In 1975, in an RBMK reactor in Leningrad,
In a prison labor camp
In an RBMK reactor of the type used at Chernobyl,
In RBMK reactors, we surround the fuel rods with graphite
In terms of radiation,
In the control room of Reactor 4
In the... in the air we breathe,
In these stories, it doesn't matter who the heroes are
In this story, it was Anatoly Dyatlov
Including a number of doctors and structural engineers
Inside a nuclear reactor
Iodine 131
Iodine pills- Why would we have iodine pills
Ionizing radiation tears the cellular structure apart
Is giving off nearly twice the radiation
Is it war- -Where's the dosimeter
Isn't that enough
Issue iodine tablets and then evacuate this city,
It burns the xenon away before it can cause a problem
It can happen with minimal radiation
It cannot go over the core
It created two problems
It doesn't look like it's under control. -Shut up, Fomin
It exploded, the core exploded
It maxed out
It may not be enough
It means it wasn't a control system tank that exploded
It means the core is open
It means the fire we're watching with our own eyes
It never stops rising. So..
It only goes to 200 roentgen, but it's better than the small ones
It was the reactor core. It's open! (inhales)
It will burn and spread its poison
It will burn and spread its poison
It's 15,000
It's a German police robot
It's about the operation of RBMK reactors under extreme conditions
It's also the maximum reading on low-limit dosimeters
It's another faulty meter. You're wasting our time
It's covered in tar, so it's gonna burn all night,
It's disgraceful, really
It's exploded! -We know
It's mostly put out. The system control tank exploded
It's not alarmist if it's a fact!
It's not military. It's uranium decay, U-235
It's not that we'll mistake them for the truth
It's not the signal. It's the vehicle
It's not three roentgen
It's the feedwater. Been around it all night
It's time to go. After 90 seconds, I will ring a bell
Kill as many as you can, whoever's left,
Let's go get you a gun
Listen carefully to each of my instructions,
Look at that glow!
Lunokhod STR-1's. They're light
Man (recorded voice)- What is the cost of lies
Man- They're bringing everybody in, military and civil
Masha will destroy it
Men
Most of these bullets will not stop firing for 100 years
Mount the dosimeter on the front
My control panel's not working
Never mind that. Focus on the fire
No gas, no fire. Just atoms
No one leaves
No one's answering the phone
No, I'm sorry, but it is not
No, no, no! They're too close!
No, that's not--This is an emergency
No, you're-you're mistaken
No. -We could be in a xenon pit
No. We're doing the test tonight. Raise power to 700
Not a meltdown, an explosion
Not at all
Not great, not terrible #chernobyl #average
Not just to the RBMK,
Not strong enough to kill the cells,
Now I don't need you
Now there you made a mistake,
Now, Chernobyl holds over three million grams,
Now, I don't know if I can make things better for you,
Now!
Of course, that sentence is doubly unfair
Of four million chest X-rays in his hand
Oh, for God's sakes
Or, at least, not important ones
Otherwise, there'll be a meltdown
Our high-range dosimeter just arrived
Over a billion trillion of these bullets
Penetrating everything in its path
Perhaps you saw burnt concrete
Pilot (over radio)- We're in position. Approaching drop
Pilot- We're approaching the power plant
Please tell me how an RBMK reactor core explodes
Please, please. My wife is here
Please, tell me how an RBMK reactor core explodes
Pravik says he thinks they're shining floodlights or something
Rain will bring them down on us
Raise the power. -No
Reactor fuel
Ready to engage main power and motor
Released by the bomb in Hiroshima
Right. I'll call Maryin
Robots only
Safety first. Always
Sends us shit equipment, then wonders why things go wrong
Shcherbina- I'm going to get you 5,000 tons of sand and boron
Shcherbina- We couldn't put a man on the moon
Sitnikov
Sitnikov! Bryukhanov wants us to use the good dosimeter,
Smooth, black mineral-graphite
So 40 bombs worth by now
So everything's my fault, then
So I'll restate- Tell me how a nuclear reactor works,
So I've already given my life
So the power level jumped from 200 to 400 megawatts
So then...- -Moon rovers
So we'll need three men
So we're digging the old way. This is how our fathers mined
So, bullets are flying off of the uranium
Some of it is in blocks, weighing approximately 40 to 50 kilograms
Some of them, not for 50,000 years
Something with the space program like a satellite or...
Something... something strange has happened
Stable iodine will keep your thyroid
Stems entirely from the description of a rock
Take care not to stumble
Take him to the infirmary
Take one a day for as long as they last
Tarakanov- Congratulations, comrades
Tarakanov- These are the most important 90 of your lives
Tell me how to put it out. -We'll use helicopters
Thank you for your service. -Comrade-
That amount of gamma radiation penetrates everything
That Chernobyl was solely the result of operator error,
That has never occurred on this planet before
That is all that matters. -There is no core
That is the most important thing, General
That number's been bothering me for a different reason, though
That piece of roof is the most dangerous place on Earth
That we have successfully protected our security interests
That's as high as it goes. The good one's locked in a safe
That's classified
That's graphite on the roof
That's how long I've done this job, 25 years
That's in one gram
That's my decision to make. -Then make it
That's nearly twice the radiation from the Hiroshima bomb
That's radiation ionizing the air!
That's three million billion trillion bullets
The Cherenkov effect. Completely normal phenomenon
The circuits in microchips apart
The control system tank. Hydrogen
The core can't explode. It has to be the tank
The core- -I didn't go in there, and I won't
The core's exposed!
The design flaws of the RBMK nuclear reactor
The dosimetrists should be checking regularly
The feedwater is mildly contaminated
The fire is giving off nearly twice the radiation
The half-life of plutonium-239 is 24,000 years
The heat will instantly vaporize the water-
The immediate effects subside
The large dosimeter from the safe,
The lid is off!
The man doesn't deserve prison
The meltdown has begun
The meter burned out the second it was turned on
The miners are making incredible progress
The neutrons are actually traveling so fast-we call this flux-
The one with the 1,000-roentgen capacity-
The operators pressed AZ-5,
The particles literally shred
The patient appears to be recovering
The power is rising
The problem's the roof
The reactor fuel is going to sink into the ground
The real danger is that if we hear enough lies,
The release of radiation will be severe
The skin blisters, turns red, then black
The Soviet people have had enough of this accident
The stack is burning. I saw it
The turbine hall
The water we drink, the food we eat
The West is now satisfied
The whole building's been blown open
The wind, it's carrying all that smoke,
Then I'll do it myself
Then they eat each other
Then we no longer recognize the truth at all
There are 16 RBMK reactors
There are more than 50 million people
There are no robots
There has been an accident at Chernobyl,
There is an enormous amount of radioactive debris
There was none
There was nothing sane about Chernobyl
There were far greater criminals than him at work
There will be deaths
There's a fire in the turbine hall
There's a hole in the roof. Take care not to fall
There's a spike in zirconium-95
There's been an accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
There's mild radiation, but it's limited to the plant itself
There's more radiation than they're saying
There's nothing left to stop it
There's something called a positive void coefficient
There's-There's graphite on the ground
They all must be thrown over the edge here
They always do
They cannot fly directly over the fire
They say Akimov pressed AZ-5,
They say the whole job will be finished in four weeks
They told the Germans that the highest detected level of radiation
They'll beat the living piss out of each of you
They'll deny it, of course
They're gonna want a full report
They're not all the way in, I disengaged the clutch
They're still only a third of the way in, I don't know why
Thirty minutes
This is a big one
This is a fissioning reactor core
This is followed by a latency period
This is the working area. We must clear the graphite
This isn't a fire
This little problem we have with the safety test..
This usually only lasts for a day or two
Throw your debris over the rail
To 1600 megawatts and is stable
To call Bryukhanov and Fomin
To lower the control rods, but the door is jammed
To six hours at a time, but otherwise..
To spread disinformation at a time like this
Too heavy. They'd fall right through
Toptunov- I need a medic! Anyone! -He's delusional
Traveling at nearly the speed of light,
Try and disconnect the servos from the standby console
Two hundred roentgen
Two thousand roentgen. One hour, fatal
Under no circumstances can men go up there
Unless the operators have pushed the reactor to the edge of disaster
Until the entire continent is dead
Until the entire continent is dead
Uses uranium 235 as fuel
Vasily! You've gotta put it out
Void coefficients have nothing to do with AZ-5
Was 2,000 roentgen
We could cover one of our trucks with lead shielding,
We expect this liquidation effort to take three years
We found another dosimeter
We have a power surge! Sasha!
We have the situation under control. -Fomin- Under control
We have to fix them
We have to shut down and wait for 24 hours
We have visual confirmation that the fire is nearly extinguished
We have wives here, we have children
We need electricians, mechanics, we need bodies
We need fans. -For what purpose
We need to get everyone out!
We need to get into the reactor hall
We need to start making our way to the roof
We need water moving through the core
We should stop
We shut it down, but the control rods are still active
We use biorobots
We used remote-controlled bulldozers in Afghanistan
We'll drop water on it like a forest fire. -No, no. You don't understand
We'll have to limit shifts
We're wasting time. Let's go
Well, I've given you everything I know
Well, that'll create problems of its own,
Well, that's not great, but it's not horrifying
Well, there was a... a tank explosion. There's debris
What about sabotage
What about the fire- -Call the fire brigade
What about the pumps- -Toptunov- I can't get through to Khodemchuk
What can we do then
What did you do-!
What do you mean dangerous- It's a fire. It's over there, we're over here
What does the dosimeter say- -3.6 roentgen, but that's as high as the meter-
What does the radiation do to them precisely
What else is left but to abandon even the hope of truth
What happened there, what happened after,
What the fuck is this- It's 3.6 roentgen
What was the number
What's wrong with you- How'd you get that number
Whatever that means. -And that if you don't immediately
When an RBMK reactor runs at low power, it's notoriously unstable
When you get to the top, wait inside,
Where you will find graphite- inside the core
Which, by the way, is not the equivalent of one chest X-ray,
Who's the next closest- -It's Chernobyl, but that's not possible
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow. -I-I didn't move any rods there
Why did I see graphite on the roof
Why didn't you initiate an emergency shutdown
Why didn't you press the AZ-5 button
Why should we do this- For what, 400 rubles
Why was this delay so dangerous
Winds will carry radioactive particles across the entire continent,
WOMAN- Why didn't you press the AZ-5 button
Woods, metal, concrete, flesh
Yes, and, uh, this concern
Yes, I worked in a shoe factory
Yes, the bullet
Yes, very good
You and Toptunov, you morons blew the tank!
You are dealing with something
You are the last of 3,828 men
You can't be in here!
You didn't see graphite
You didn't! Because it's not there!
You have 15 minutes
You have performed your duties perfectly
You haven't got enough bullets for all of us
You load the bodies on the truck,
You mean disinfectant- -No, pills. Does the hospital stock iodine pills
You saw men outside vomiting
You saw men with burns
You two, get the backup pumps running
You will each have no more than 90 seconds to solve this problem
You will enter Reactor Building Three,
You will need it for what comes next
You will need to move quickly, and you will need to move carefully
You worked in a shoe factory
You worked with the reactor. You know it better than I do
You wouldn't give us fans, it's too hot for clothes
You're a nuclear engineer, so am I
You're an expert on RBMK reactors, correct
You're confused. RBMK reactor cores don't explode
You're excused
You're not on call tonight
Yuri says the only thing is, you can't walk right up to the fuel
...directly over an open reactor, we'll be dead within a week!
(alarms blaring, buzzing)
(alarms blaring, buzzing)
(alarms blaring, buzzing)
(alarms blaring) -What just happened
(chuckles)- Chemicals
(chuckling)- Of course not
(distant alarm blaring)
(distant explosion) -(gasps)
(dosimeter alarm buzzing)
(dosimeter beeps)
(dosimeter clicking faintly)
(dosimeter clicking rapidly)
(dosimeter clicking)
(dosimeter crackling loudly)
(dosimeter's clicking grows louder)
(dosimeters clicking loudly, rapidly)
(dosimeters crackling loudly)
(helicopter whomping)
(indistinct radio transmission)
(indistinct radio transmissions)
(indistinct radio transmissions)
(line ringing)
(line rings)
(loud tone drones)
(loud tone drones)
(loud tone drones)
(retching)
(ringing continues)
(rotary phone dialing)
(shouting)- Comrade Dyatlov! Comrade Dyatlov!
(voices over phone speaking Russian)
(vomiting)
(woman moans softly) -You're doing fine
3.6 roentgen per hour
3.6-not great, not terrible
