A beautiful, beautiful adventure.
A CIA head in Nicaragua.
A couple of years later,
A drug pilot, and we spoke to him
A Fast and Furious of the '80s.
A former Hazen resident who supposedly jumped
A good policy is...
A joint, and a Jimi Hendrix tape and some rolling papers.
A little money doing that.
A lot of people make money. It's easy to make money.
A lot of weird stuff happened there.
A nice suit, a Rolex watch, you know? (LAUGHS)
A non traditional lifestyle?
A person had his neck put on a chair here and his feet here,
A piece of the Contra drug story.
A pound here, a pound there, you know, I'd make
A really nice house.
A secret agent.
A service to mankind. (CHUCKLES) That's what it always felt like.
A seventh American today was kidnapped by gunmen
A smuggler, you know, supplying drugs and poison
A story of deceit, and duplicity,
A task force of Drug Enforcement Agents
About a world that I was investigating,
About a year later, George was having trouble.
About all that took place, and I'm waiting to find out.
About anything, it puts you in a different category.
About being able to prove a Contra link
About crazy smugglers.
About fairness and integrity.
About flying and smuggling and...
About Gary Betzner is the night he disappeared.
About how he was flying planeloads of cocaine.
About landing there, about offloading guns,
About loading up drugs and flying them back to the United States.
About Soviet ships in Nicaragua and what they may be carrying.
About that hyphen in the middle. And it's really helpful if
About the Contra aid or not, sir?
About these activities. Gary Betzner.
About these tiny little countries.
About this big, a hard drive.
About this book called The Divine Plant of the Incas,
About three close to three years.
About what this was about.
About what's really going on.
About where you should land and where you should return to?
Advising, supposedly on military tactics, the Contras.
After all was said and done, no one ended up going to jail.
After many hours, he got hungry,
After ten months of a congressional investigation,
After that, there was, like, crickets.
After the guns were unloaded, was something loaded
After time goes on and I hear about Oliver North
After we ran that story, we started getting calls
Against the narcotics problem.
Alaska was the last of the Wild West. You know?
All day long on Christmas day.
All I wanted to do is build my business up enough
All kinds of military equipment.
All of a sudden, all roads led to John Hull.
All of that is so fragile.
All of these are crimes that law enforcement officials
All of this stuff pertains to Gary,
All of us were smoking dope. And he would say to me, "Ed,
All the footage, all the archives.
All the people we thought were our friends,
All these files, all these boxes and boxes of stuff, I mean,
All those feelings I stuffed from when I was six,
All white. TV screens so you could see who was outside.
Allegedly were trying to sell about a pound of cocaine
Allied with the Soviet Union, is a permanent threat to us all.
An individual farmer can't make a living on the land anymore.
An invisible, lawless empire?
An outward feeling of what was going on in me
And a comb, and a pillow. That was it. Pillow.
And a White House in public disarray.
And actually all we have is each other and the family.
And advisors of the National Security Council
And all of a sudden, Washington wants to talk to them too.
And all the dots connected.
And all the drugs and runs the whole country?
And becoming a felon, and then eventually
And bring coke back from Costa Rica.
And brought the photographs back to me.
And called out my name.
And choice of Arkansas.
And come in." Because we were nudists.
And crop dusting was the only aviation place
And descend into the yard. Me and Terry jump aboard,
And didn't have to do it around the family or whatever.
And do whatever I got to do to get it together
And drop cold beer to ‘em. (LAUGHS)
And even necessary.
And fasting, and I found a place that was full of fruit,
And flown under their noses and made millions of dollars.
And for John Kerry.
And for Ronald Reagan, the Contra cause
And from that point on, my life changed.
And from that point, I flew with Luke.
And from that, evolved into smuggling weed.
And Gary ran under and hid under the porch.
And get a new one out,
And get to my airplane...
And give him everything I could to substantiate it.
And go to prison, you know? I was going to be taken
And God, it's beautiful there, it looks like the Alps.
And got in the plane took off.
And grabbed him, and just beat the daylights out of him.
And growing a few plants.
And had another child at this time.
And had, like, little pink curlers in her hair,
And had, like, the pink nightgown on.
And he asked me if I would... help him out.
And he brought him some food, said, “You come out,
And he called me by my name, my real name.
And he could never pull the yoke back very far
And he drowned.”
And he gave my mom a check, she got in the car,
And he goes, “Hey, we're gonna go see your great grandma.”
And he grabbed us, and he's like... (CACKLES)
And he had an atrium, you know, full of tropical flowers,
And he had made millions and millions and millions of dollars.
And he had the coke there and...
And he offered up more and more specificity.
And he parks the car.
And he pulled up in a jet airplane.
And he put his hand out. I shook his hand.
And he said, "Oh, no, no, no. Everything will be okay."
And he said, "You're gonna work for us from now on."
And he said, “No, I'm gonna have public hearings.
And he says, "I'm from the dog star, Sirius."
And he told them that they were a piece of steel.
And he took me to Texarkana.
And he totally believed in what he was doing, that,
And he very definitely knew about Sally and Claudia.
And he was disappointed I had gotten busted.
And he was like...
And he was, you know, single.
And he wouldn't do it.
And he'd fill up the whole front seat. (LAUGHS)
And held incommunicado. Brazenly turning around,
And his family, his son, his daughter or whatever,
And his involvement down there.
And his wife gave me his birth certificate.
And his wife, they never knew the truth.
And how did they end up working for the U.S. Government?
And how to evade a radar.
And I admit that I'm a coward.
And I can't push the goddamn pedals.
And I changed schools from Henderson
And I couldn't get it all in there,
And I did pretty good for years.
And I did.
And I didn't have responsibility to anybody,
And I didn't want to use Tackett because I didn't feel like I was a Tackett.
And I dive for the ground.
And I don't know who picked me up...
And I drove off.
And I empty my pockets, and I had a cube of hash,
And I got in a pickup truck with my friend.
And I got in the car with him, and I passed out.
And I guess employees said that...
And I had everything going.
And I had had enough.
And I had to go get drug tested, psychological evaluation.
And I hollered over to George, said, “George!” He says, “What”"
And I just looked over there and put my hand out
And I just suddenly realized...
And I just was able to just tell him, like, “I love you,
And I knew it and nobody else knew it.
And I know they can't see down on the water, like I get on the water.
And I looked at my mom and was like, "Mom!"
And I looked back, and I had 2,000 pounds of guns and shit on it, right?
And I looked over at the newspaper stand.
And I lost it.
And I love him dearly.
And I love my dad, don't get me wrong,
And I never liked “Betzner.”
And I never talked to him again.
And I remember just like, looking at the jailer,
And I remember...
And I said, "Hey, man, what the fuck?
And I said, "Well, yeah, I think I do." (CHUCKLES)
And I said, “Is it true?”
And I saw down the highway, they got pulled over.
And I saw the pipeline as my opportunity.
And I see a marshal out there behind a car,
And I should be locked away, or, you know, exterminated.
And I started preparing to leave.
And I think he kinda died in Florida.
And I told him that he could have the helicopter
And I took about a half a million bucks and moved up to Alaska.
And I warned him.
And I was a fugitive, and I had five different IDs.
And I was gonna take George with me.
And I was in a trance, pretty much,
And I was in the hole, and George was in the hole,
And I was like, "I'm gonna be okay."
And I was like, “He was dead my whole life."
And I was like...
And I was very pregnant.
And I was, like, giving him and Mom a minute
And I went back to Arkansas, awaiting the trial.
And I went to Alaska to bid on a pipeline reclamation.
And I would tell them the same answer,
And I wrote this drug crazed suicide note.
And I'd been in prison for about a year before I ran into him.
And I'm just like, freaking out. I was... vicious, it was like,
And I'm like, "Wow, he's alive."
And I'm looking forward to tomorrow.
And I'm not in it." (LAUGHS)
And I've never failed to get one out yet.
And I've never failed to get one out yet.
And identify the exact location that you landed at
And if he had that in his heart, then he could have, like,
And if I could just get across that damn fence
And if that cocaine had just belonged to this drug dealer,
And International Communications,
And is expected to serve a minimum of ten years.
And is not connected with the government.
And it could only have happened in America.
And it destroyed me when he was there.
And it did that for me.
And it got progressively worse.
And it had lots of books in there.
And it healed every known disease
And it lasted about three months. We went every weekend.
And it said, “Gary Wayne Betzner,
And it said...
And it sounded like a gunshot going off.
And it was a big blow.
And it was almost like a voice came to me
And it was hard to believe that it was somebody you knew.
And it was incredible. How would someone
And it was like this...
And it wasn't a big town. I mean, a town of 1400.
And it'd go up, and put it down.
And it's coming from the direction
And it's flat land all the way to the sea.
And it's gonna be a wonderful life."
And just taxi up to that hangar, no problem.
And just tripping on mushrooms,
And just trust us that it's all gonna be okay.
And just when I had enough air speed, I sucked it back...
And knew something about the Contras.
And let me just sit back in the back.
And like pushed the gun out of the way
And live there for years and years.
And lo and behold, there's Gary Betzner,
And looking forward to the future and all that kinda stuff, and...
And maybe, because of that, he did not get a good deal.
And Miami New York record holder, George Morales.
And Mom went to therapy.
And my arm would go up and I'd put it down,
And my Aunt Lois came over. And I was like, “What?”
And my dad hands me carrot juice.
And my health is somewhat impaired,
And my whole family went down to Sheridan, Arkansas,
And never beat me out of a nickel."
And no one was around.
And none of our dads were secret agents.
And nothing but the truth, so help you God?
And nothing on the outside is gonna be here forever.
And now you fucked them all up, and they got to start all over
And NSC operative Oliver North,
And of narcotics, narcotics trafficking.
And off we'd go.
And our parents gave us a choice
And peace on Earth, you know? (CHUCKLES)
And probably a hundred grenade launchers.
And probably get life up here in Arkansas for an ounce."
And proof of that guilt.
And put all three in my mouth like that.
And put it in my Honda and drove off.
And putting together pieces so there'd be a coherent narrative.
And raise your right hand so that I can swear you.
And said, "Okay..."
And Sara Lee got upset, 'cause she was upset.
And sat down in a chair. Instead of locking me up,
And sat us and were looked at seriously.
And she agreed with me. That was our best shot.
And she left me with a toothbrush,
And she walked out there, and she says, with her hands on her hips,
And she wanted to see him. So, we went down
And she was fucked up about it.
And she was to be there every month at a specific time.
And she would accept the collect call,
And smoking weed and hanging out and living every day.
And so I called him up, and he told me
And so I had a pretty good thing going.
And so I name myself Harmony. Lucas Noel Harmony.
And so I think journalists were extremely curious
And so I'd go up and I'd steal fruit at night.
And so it's difficult to make a living doing that anymore.
And so much cocaine was going through,
And so they left to go to the hotel.
And so was she.
And so we made our plans.
And so we started investigating.
And so we were asking ourselves, "What was the connection?"
And so we'd make two million dollars on a trip. (CHUCKLES)
And so when you start being really honest with yourself,
And so, I made arrangements to talk to him.
And so, they started thinking, "Well, maybe we should give them
And some clothes
And spending it on something you're not supposed to spend it on.
And stacked them up front,
And start a new life there and...
And start going north on Highway 1.
And stuff like that down to the Contras.
And stuff went everywhere.
And talk to people. It's another thing
And ten hits of acid. And I got it from him
And that he's not gonna kowtow to their laws.
And that no one cares to stop it.
And that place used to scare the shit out of me when I was kid. Like...
And that set of questions was a set of questions
And that some of the proceeds
And that something was weapons, missiles.
And that was okay.
And that's really hard, dangerous work. I mean, hard,
And that's the experience of knowledge of the self...
And that's what Maharaji shows us.
And that's when I went to George and I was kind of scared.
And that's where this wild and crazy story
And the arrogant disregard of the rule of law.
And the jailer went and just undid his arms.
And the kids and I got the lower, small bedrooms.
And the military's running everything.
And the people I've had to deal with.
And the phone company never knew.
And the television.
And the woman that was riding him
And then come back into the islands,
And then found out that Travis and Sara Lee knew
And then George decided he didn't want to go.
And then I hired a copilot.
And then I went to prison for 12 years.
And then just kinda walk and stop in front of me.
And then me being told
And then my brother had his plane crash...
And then my brother in law, Travis Leander Mathews,
And then Shawn Masters would get up and stand on their stomach.
And then the longer it was, the less they would come.
And then they'll tell you what you're supposed to do."
And then we can go forward and get people to say,
And then we flew somewhere else with different clothes on.
And then we got one trip a week that was four million.
And then you find out about a third hole...
And there's a few that stayed there, and God love 'em,
And there's a hole you're gonna go in.
And these guys were sitting next to us,
And these people in Iran wanted something very specific
And they are not willing to wait much longer.
And they got the master suite,
And they just kept asking questions.
And they looked for my body for about two weeks.
And they said, “Okay, we're gonna go get your dad now.”
And they took me into this room,
And they were gonna start carrying powder,
And they were good at it.
And they'll stick around and face the music.
And they're having anal sex, and Lucas goes,
And things changed when I appeared.
And things wouldn't be as we had "anticipated."
And this guy comes down.
And this guy's wife is riding Lucas
And this is the end of it. I'm gone."
And up through Biscoe...
And very dramatic, always very dramatic.
And wanted to take a picture of me and Polly.
And was doing anything he could to help out the effort
And we all survive by... what our actions are.
And we didn't tell her. It was a big
And we get in his car, and we're driving out
And we had a good conversation
And we had a real good marriage, and we were happy,
And we had breakfast served, and I had eggs Benedict
And we need to stop them.
And we said goodbye.
And we struck up a friendly bond.
And we were in this El Camino.
And we were talking back and forth,
And we'd go to Wendy's like two or three days a week.
And we'd make plans
And we'd smoke cigarettes over there.
And we'll live happily ever after.
And we'll stick it in their ass!”
And we're just thinking of names that we're gonna have.
And we're livin' there for a while...
And went back to the airport.
And whaled him on it, and the guy turned on him,
And what else are they doing?
And what it means to be a dad, and what the ramifications
And what was loaded into that flight?
And what was the infrastructure of it?”
And when he would come around, he'd bring presents.
And when I looked in his eyes...
And whoever I had in my pocket, that's who I was.
And with that particular airplane,
And you assume no one's gonna catch you.
And you can tell before he turns around
And you go up, and...
And you're on your way.
And your mind has to switch gears.
And, I was like...
And, to this very day, he will never admit that he did it.
And, uh, the best cure in the world for it is cocaine.
And, uh, we were married
And, uh, we'd go to see him.
And, uh... did it 15 years.
And, uh... it was rather interesting.
And, um... I did.
And, um... they were like...
And, you know, anything you wanted to do. (CHUCKLING)
And, you know, have a lot of problems, I'd just
And, you know, still today, people will say
And, you know, uh, cow tipping.
And, you might say, heartbreaking than...
And...
And...
And... (CHUCKLES) ...where the money came from.
ANNOUNCER: From CBS News headquarters in New York,
ANNOUNCER: The White House in turmoil.
Another truck came up and put the cocaine in duffel bags on the plane.
Another vehicle, and she told them
Any, you know, they're they just float.
Anyone wanted an answer to was "Did Reagan know about it?"
Anything I'd ever done in my life, really.
Apparently he had hired somebody up here
Are calling it a crisis. Some call it a scandal,
Are mining Nicaraguan harbors.
Are you recording this? Why don't you wait
ARMSTRONG: Houston Tranquility Base here,
Around the time my dad got arrested.
As he said and again and again, President Reagan,
As time went on, things went kind of awry.
As well as CIA director William Casey.
As you hear the applause.
At six o'clock, one morning, I heard the door knock,
At that time with each other.
At the same time, the drug problem in America
At the time, I had 27 years. Phew. That's a lot of years.
Attempting another avenue to try and outsmart...
ATTORNEY GENERAL SMITH: One of the most important steps ever taken
ATTORNEY GENERAL WILLIAM SMITH: Today, I am announcing
Back then, I was like, "Well, they look different," you know?
Barring the White House from engaging
Basically, I'm just a farm boy from Arkansas, really.
Be in love with a smuggler. It gets complicated,
Beatles being bad. (LAUGHS)
Became the whole story. And the only question
Because at this time my ego was so big,
Because he acted in Hazen. He played the part.
Because he can play the violin, and do all this incredible stuff
Because he was Disneyland Dad, you know?
Because I am completely innocent.
Because I know it's on many people's minds.
Because I think that he was one of the better witnesses.
Because it closed the circle. That was good stuff.
Because it was unheard of, people getting involved
Because Lucas...
Because my story didn't change. (CHUCKLES)
Because sometimes that doesn't go along with...
Because the eventuality factor is so intense.
Because there was no way I was ever gonna cross him.
Because they already had me. George knew him,
Because they don't have any real thing to grasp,
Because they took pictures
Because they weren't supposed to negotiate with terrorists.
Because this body's gonna die,
Because you didn't go where they expected you to go. (CHUCKLES)
Been out for two days, no sleep.
Before he killed himself. I was five.
Before school. It was an alley called the Smoke Hole...
Before there has been proper evidence produced
Before they put the handcuffs on me. (CHUCKLES)
Being a big badass leader...
Being a crop duster
Being a crop duster, I had a natural knack
Being in love with Gary,
Bernie Tomlinson from Lonoke, Arkansas.
Between Nicaragua and the United States
Betzner was my stepfather's name.
BILL CLINTON: You know, it's gotten to where
BILL MOYERS: It was, in effect, a coup.
Blum came down and talked to Morales and Gary
Bob Parry and I did this story
Boom! In the universe, it just shook.
BRIAN BARGER: I don't think that you could make the case
BRIAN BARGER: One of the stories we heard was that there was this fellow
BRIAN: Gary was flying guns down to John Hull's ranch...
BRIAN: He told me about how he and his girlfriend at the time
BRIAN: He was able to establish a direct piece of evidence
BRIAN: I ended up doing more than 400 hours
BRIAN: Other people who talked to these folks
BRIAN: Over time, I talked to him more and more,
BRIAN: Usually, drug traffickers are people who do not use the product.
BROADCASTER: And it's all perfectly legal.
BROADCASTER: Even in public, many adults smoke pot with impunity,
BURKE SIMS:
But a feeling came over me that was so powerful,
But administration and Contra sources tell NBC News
But apparently, Travis must have... (CHUCKLES) ...said a few things.
But as a human being,
But because of what happened...
But because so much money was being made by Lucas
But every one of those things that I've done
But everything still works pretty good.
But for me, hauling guns...
But he was a good pilot, really was.
But he was also interested in American foreign policy
But he was high as hell, you know?
But he was on the run.
But he was with this queen bee.
But his daughter Polly and his ex wife
But how accurate that is, I don't know.
But I always checked my load. (CHUCKLES)
But I did come back.
But I do, I do. If you People say,
But I don't know where it put him.
But I figured it was like anything else in life, just...
But I just needed to make a little extra cash.
But I knew what was going on.
But I liked it. Like it's some kind of espionage, you know?
But I respect you too much to make excuses.
But I respected his decision.
But I saw it happening
But I still had gout real bad, and I had to do something.
But I think the past makes a good reference point...
But I'd lost my family. I'd lost Actually, I was dead.
But if I knew what I was looking for,
But if you're 500 miles out there,
But in my heart and soul, I had bigger plans.
But it belonged to Pablo.
But it must have dawned on them, he physically didn't do anything
But it's basically legal everywhere, and...
But it's hard to hold on to.
But it's impossible to do what I did and get away with it
But it's one thing for me as an investigator to go out
But it's strong.
But Lucas was also Lucas deteriorated,
But no one can ever know...
But no, he's dead."
But not arms for hostages.
But not that stupid. You know what I mean?
But one thing is different now.
But politicians don't save you,
But still, Gary will always be
But that it could happen again.
But that never happened.
But that was gone in, you know, five years.
But the biggest influence on me as far as my character
But the DEA screwed that up.
But the fear at the time was that the Soviet Union was using their influence
But the idea was hatched that the money being generated
But the real reason I went to Miami
But the small town of their mind.
But then again, it was a game.
But then I noticed my toes hurt.
But then I started putting things together.
But then Maharaji just called and said, "They want you to come
But then one day he was on the news.
But there's a lot of fiction in truth.
But they brought him in in chains, you know?
But they let me go to prison and fry, you know what I mean?
But they never talk about the women in the family.
But was considered true for some ten years.
But we should be living our own lives, and...
But when it happened, when the whole thing happened,
But who you really are...
But you know, he and I weren't very emotionally connected
But, you know, being dead is a
BUZZ ALDRIN: Roger. Understand. Go for landing, 3,000 feet.
By Federal Drug Enforcement officials in Gainesville, Florida.”
By the U.S. government, White House officials
By these secret arms sales
By this outcome. There was a sense that...
By, you know, private contractors,
Can do anything.
Can go off the rails so easily,
Can never die.
Can you tell us what you know about that, sir?
Can't outrun a bullet. (CHUCKLES)
Carlyle Harmony. (CHUCKLES)
Carrying heavy loads over unimproved air strips,
Chaired by Massachusetts Senator John Kerry,
CIA.
CLAUDIA: And there's bringing you home from the hospital.
CLAUDIA: He was very instantaneous and very dramatic.
CLAUDIA: You know, we followed the story that,
Codenamed Operation Tiburon.
Colombian Cartel from Santa Marta.
Colonel North, isn't it true that you shredded them?
Coming back into the United States.
Coming in. Mass killings, shootings.
Coming out of this hole, you go back in this hole.
Committed suicide here in Hazen.
Compared to what had happened
Completely run amok.
Concern for the Contras obstructed its war on drugs.
Congress had passed a very specific law
Continues hearings this week.
Cops jumped out and had machine guns
Could be used to fund the secret war in Nicaragua. And that's the hyphen.
Couldn't ever find his body.
Craig comes running in, he's going,
CRAIG HODGES: Gary became an international drug smuggler,
CRAIG HODGES: I'll tell you this.
CRAIG: And I walked up to his house...
CRAIG: And she smiled and said, "Come on in."
CRAIG: Dude, does this plane look airworthy?
CRAIG: He was holding court, and he was telling stories

Did I do something wrong? Was I not pretty enough?
Did my dad send me a present, like, for my birthday?”
Didn't Couldn't ever find his body.
Didn't dive deeply into exactly how what happened came about.
Didn't feel that anyone had the right
Didn't look good.
Different things in life, just like you were,
Disappeared, mysterious drug overdoses.
Dixie Mafia was something that everybody knew about.
Do you know who touched this flower? (GIGGLES)

Everything got shut down in Colombia.

For journalists to pull on.
For some reason, Gary did not. I don't frankly understand that,

From the Iran arm sales to the Contras.
From the United States in exchange for their help.
