A Charles Colson plan to firebomb
A consultant of President Richard Nixon's
A conversation with Charles Colson,
A full, extensive look back over his life, his presidency.
A full, free and absolute pardon
A full, no holds barred confession.
A goal. A battle. A struggle.
A handsome young fellow,
A handsome young fellow,
A man arrested trying to bug the offices
A man who, as far as l know, had never even voted once in his life.
A man with no political convictions whatsoever,
A meat factory in Brisbane
A moment unlike any other in the history of this country.
A moment unlike any other in the history of this country.
A partisan Ervin Committee.
A place the snobs always told us that we'd end up.
A public opinion poll indicates
A record kept of every verbal agreement,
A sort of bamboo Pentagon which proved not to exist at all.
A tractor on some Ukrainian potato farm.
A two to one disapproval of the pardoning of Richard Nixon.
A week? Goodness, Jim, we can't lose you for that long.
A what?
A White House aide told NBC News today
About any of it, frankly!
About his favorite subject, steel mills.
About Richard Nixon would be a confession.
About some of the great decisions that we'd participated in.
About the illicit bombing of Cambodia?
About what exactly?
About you weren't so kind to me.
Actually, before l sign on, l would like to hear
Actually, no. ln his rather smart beachside villa
After everything that prick's done to this country?
After it was clear the Southern Democrats
After researching my last book,
After the meeting, as a souvenir of the visit,
After the taping finished, l overheard two members of the crew say
Again, that's probably a question you should. . .
Against a partisan media, a partisan House of Congress,
Against him, the Brookings lnstitute,
Against the Vietnam War!
Ah.
All right, look, it's useless me trying to answer your points.
All right, this is just madness. lt's Richard Nixon.
All right, you blokes, let's get the set broken down.
All right! ...and genocide.
All right.
All that shit about Ben Hur and struggling to raise the money.
All that was Haldeman and Ehrlichman's business.
All the ClA and Pentagon intelligence suggested it would fail.
All those months of pep talks and the hype,
All those sons of bitches ever want to hear about is Watergate!
All, underlined. And they are to send their teams in to see
Almost always of the confidential variety,
Almost married Diahann Carroll.
Also quitting under fire is John Ehrlichman.
Am l gonna shake. . .
Am l right?
An agreement that after each question
An eligible young bachelor alone on a Friday night.
And 30% may have been wrong, but he thought it was right at the time.
And a conscientious note taker.
And a million lndo Chinese during his administration.
And above all, don't let him give these self serving, 23 minute homilies.
And all your liberal friends can use it as a dartboard.
And at airports by people with gloves on.
And Bob Haldeman is a rigorous
And by sending B 52s to carpet bomb a country,
And Cambodia? An invasion which everybody advised you against.
And comfortably. John, we have to do something.
And consider, if you will,
And creating a monster in the Khmer Rouge
And David, we never really saw much of David.
And even the political press corps,
And for all those mistakes l have a very deep regret.
And for the other, it'll be the wilderness,
And forget about the trivia, David.
And from our point of view, well,
And from that moment on, you know you have the upper hand.
And guess what else he is.
And he hates me to defame animals.
And he left the country that elected him in trauma.
And he said, Sir, l got only one criticism of that Cambodia thing.
And he watched his father die from the cancer he caught in the steelworks.
And here is Carl Stern, who has that ruling.
And here's the bigger question, why do it? You don't need it.
And how many potentially devastating consequences
And I don't think it will ever now be fully known.
And I don\t want any argument about it.
And I would try and anticipate what his response might be.
And if in years to come, people look back
And if the networks are against you,
And if you're asking the question
And in a moment. . .
And in this case, l didn't have a corrupt motive.
And is that Sammy Cahn?
And is writing a book about the criminal dishonesty, corruption,
And isn't that why we work so hard now, why we fight for every inch,
And it looked to me... Jump in.
And it's just the sort of banal anecdote that would distract a talk. . .
And it's no defense to say that your plan failed.
And just for fun, your close friend Jack Kennedy.
And Kennedy's so goddamn handsome and blue eyed !
And Khrushchev knew that the Chairman
And l apologize for that. And l know how difficult it is
And l could go on. Now, it seems to me
And l got Watergate and the abuses of power.
And l guess if l'd been in their place, l'd have done the same thing.
And l have always maintained what they were doing,
And l know you're already in for more than l asked for,
And l like that.
And l shall be your fiercest adversary.
And l the rigorous interviewer.
And l think that unless you say it,
And l thought l made it clear!
And l was involved in a cover up, as you call it.
And l'm gonna have to carry that burden with me
And l'm sorry to say that l just got around to reading it tonight.
And made an offer.
And my producer, John Birt.
And Nixon the Man.
And no one predicted that they'd fall apart like this.
And office complex in Washington, Jack.
And outlining a range of offenses,
And partly to ensure there was
And pay a half a million dollars for the privilege.
And people all over the world want me to ask.
And people who know me would tell you
And prepare for the interviews.
And remind people the Nixon years weren't all bad.
And rush into the ocean to celebrate.
And said, Hey, there's the two men.
And say it was in this interview
And send a car with a phone.
And she so seldom cries.
And someone who's already had his own show canceled, incidentally?
And soon after arriving in California,
And spying on Senator Kennedy and other Democrats.
And stolen a ton of pork sausages.
And syndicate it ourselves, completely bypassing the networks.
And that in the bars around Capitol Hill and Georgetown
And that is what makes me nervous.
And that l have my eyebrows trimmed.
And that that team would be led
And that you did break the law?
And that you fly around a great deal.
And that's Liddy, right?
And the American people, they loved him for it!
And the American people?
And the Chairman, Jesus, the way he put his foot down,
And the day during the impeachment hearings
And the day I walked my eldest daughter Tricia down the aisle.
And the dreams of all those young people
And the emptiness when it's gone.
And the finest producer l know by my side.
And the mistakes you made, and so on, and l was wondering
And the President will be on the large monitor.
And the sickening thought that it may never come back.
And the subsequent cover up and investigation.
And their foreign minister, well,
And then across the table, Mrs. Nixon and Chairman Mao himself, well,
And then after a few moments, we both got up again, and Henry says. . .
And then do something illegal?
And then finally, it had come to this.
And then further down, Dr. Kissinger
And then you're off to a grand university full of richer, posher types.
And there's nothing we could do about it.
And there's still no guarantee it'll ever see the light of day.
And these interviews are always gonna be around for future generations
And they twisted it with relish.
And they'd have me putting in my hospital room.
And thirdly, l put the American people
And this ridiculous self flagellation,
And threatening to derail the whole enterprise.
And to say, having considered it,
And very possibly, l would have won
And Vice President Ford, I mean, let's not forget
And we prepared for that, hadn't we, Jack?
And we're gonna want to run with it.
And we're not?
And what? Come on, David.
And whatever you do, l will support you.
And who was desperate to move the agenda on from Watergate,
And with the eyes of the world focused on the White House,
And women all over him !
And worst of all,
And yet l've hardly gotten to know you.
And you remember that hunch you had about the meeting
And you see it in the challenger's face.
And you, sir.
And, of course, you know, being Al,
And, yes, it might have been a crime, too.
And?
And?
And?
ANNOUNCER: And now, the host of Frost Over Australia,
Apparently.
Are they going to give us the money?
Are we close, John?
Are you a sad person?
Are you kidding me?
Are you nuts?
Are you on your way home?
Are you really saying that in certain situations,
Are you sure?
As a president, you get used to this kind of stuff.
As a result of our incursion into Cambodia, we picked up 22,000 rifles,
As did his friends and investors,
As for Richard Nixon,
As for the work over the months, we divided it into three sections.
As he was after the interviews,
As it happens, l have.
As l understand it, it's been quite a struggle.
As opposed to what? Nixon the horse?
As part of our general preparations.
As President of the United States,
At first, l couldn't understand why
At what moment did you know you were going to resign?
Bad time?
Be an umbrella term for everything negative.
Be specific.
Be that as it may, the direct consequences
Beans, peas and lamb, please.
Bearing in mind the extraordinary pressure that he's under?
Because David had succeeded on that final day
Because each is different.
Because he came up to me
Because it would create headlines
Because l had written about and watched Nixon for years,
Because l was expecting questions on Vietnam.
Because of the Coast Guard radio interference,
Because the limelight can only shine on one of us.
Because there was no admission of guilt.
Because they're in the greater interests of the nation !
Because we could feel it slipping away.
Because we will make life difficult for them after the election.
Because you're doing something here
Before he left California for London again,
Before it becomes an undemocratic event?
Before the tape starts running.
Before we start, l just want to say
Bentley.
Better than that, ma'am. lt's a shutout.
Better?
Between Nixon and Colson?
Billy Graham around is Rosenberg.
BIRT: And from day one, we kept all our files in a locked safe.
BlRT: David, how could you have done that? What?
BlRT: Don't worry.
BlRT: Haldeman. RESTON : Haldeman. And Ehrlichman, too.
BlRT: Okay, the White House taping system.
BlRT: Seventeen?
BlRT: This is a breach of contract. We could sue.
Bob Zelnick was quite as euphoric
Bob's been Washington correspondent
BREN NAN : Look, we're all in this together.
BRENNAN: Well, in boxing, you know, there's always that first moment,
But an interview like this?
But before we go, Caroline and l would like you
But Dr. Lundgren made me give them up.
But hadn't syndicated well and had been dropped by the network.
But he was a man who had one big advantage over the rest of us.
But I should say right now that I'm not expecting
But if he ran for office again today, he'd get their support.
But if l could get Frost to pay more and secure better terms,
But if you gave me a week back in the Federal Courthouse library. . .
But if your viewers really do have a major concern,
But in February, your personal lawyer came to Washington
But in the end, David heard nothing.
But instead of the satisfaction l imagined l'd feel,
But it's indescribable.
But l don't. l just hear a man doing it
But l need you to dig a little deeper.
But l never knew the exact date,
But l realize no one else shares that view.
But l simply cannot share your view.
But l think the people need to hear it.
But l wonder, could we possibly spare the post mortem for now?
But l'd like to begin completely out of context
But l'd like to think that each of us in our own way
But let me assure you, it's a whole lot more than they wanted.
But Manolo here is a lover of dogs,
But no more sucking around. From now on, they come to me.
But no sooner did you get into the White House
But now they think, lt's all too corrupt, and the rest.
But one of the principal justifications you gave for the incursion
But television and the close up,
But tell me something.
But that was before l really understood
But the $1 20,000 or whatever it is, right?
But they don't taste like burgers at all.
But they tell me that they were a great success.
But they were my mistakes. l don't blame anybody.
But this is the first time l've actually seen him in the flesh.
But this session only lasts two hours.
But this transcript of a tape made three days earlier
But those voices ringing in our head.
But to go on and carry on denying it all. . .
But what made you exceptional, they said,
But whenever l have had my doubts,
But you believe me,
But you know what? We can't ask him about his brother,
But, if you remember, it was a difficult time.
But, yes, l will admit there were times
By asking you one question,
By implication, it's the country that suffers.
By my Washington political colleagues.
By the end, wiretapping students and breaking into journalists' homes
By the full House of Representatives now is a virtual certainty.
By the most unlikely of white knights,
Bye bye.
Bye bye. Goodbye.
Cambridge.
CAMERAMAN : Stand by for camera.
Can get away with them, you know.
Can l be Crack One?
Can l be Deep Crack?
Can l get something for somebody?
CAROLlN E: Jack Anderson in The Washington Post,
CAROLlN E: No, thank you.
CAROLlN E: So how about you? Where are you going?
Celebrate? Celebrate what, David?
Champagne?
CHANCELLOR: One telegram from Virginia said, Roosevelt had his New Deal,
Change the tapes.
Characterizing a president who was easily outraged
Cheerio. Bye.
Cheeseburgers?
Cheeseburgers.
Clearly shows that to be a falsehood.
Come on in. Make yourselves at home.
Come on in. This is my office.
Come on, David, Cambodia.
Come on, it's just between us.
Come on, John, we've done political interviews before.
Come on, John.
Come on. lt'll be no trouble at all.
Come out of his own pocket.
Come the hour, he'll be fine. Okay?
Contractually, l think that we made
Contractually, l think that we made
Correct.
Correct.
Could you give us a couple of minutes?
Couldn't have expressed it more clearly than that, could they?
Crack investigators?
Craft services is that way.
Credibility of the project. What else are advertising sales based on?
Cubans with ClA training.
Cut it. Cut it.
Daddy, you're the finest man l know?
Damn it! Damn it!
Dark blue, cherry wood, leather.
David !
David Frost. English talk show guy.
David has a film premiere he needs to attend.
David is a performer of the highest caliber.
David was on the cover of Time magazine and Newsweek magazine.
David, can l talk to you for a minute, please?
David, can l talk to you for a sec?
David, did you hear that?
David, good luck.
David, l want to say congratulations.
David, l'm gonna go in with you on camera.
David, we're starting with camera two in four,
David, you can't do that. lt would be a disaster.
David?
David? Four, three, two, and. . .
David.
David.
DAVlS: David, starting on camera three in four, three, two and. . .
DAVlS: Ed, we gotta get in here and change out this 750, ASAP.
DAVlS: Listen, we have an issue in here.
DAVlS: Set. And roll.
DAVlS: Stand by to roll tape in 30 seconds.
DAVlS: Ten seconds.
DAVlS: That's not my call. You're gonna have to talk to the director.
DAVlS: Thirty seconds to tape roll !
DEAN: At one point in the conversation,
Debate, intellectual discipline.
Delighted to meet you.
Delivery courtesy of Nate 'n Al's
Diane Sawyer, Frank Gannon, lrving Lazar.
Dick. Wait.
Did l really call you that night?
Did the snobs there look down on you, too?
Did we discuss anything important?
Did you do any fornicating?
Did you feel that you'd betrayed the people that had elected you?
Did you know that Mike Wallace is doing a piece on this?
Did you take pity on me?
Difficult questions.
DlRECTOR: David, starting with camera two,
DlRECTOR: l'm sorry, gentlemen.
DlRECTOR: Okay, that is a cut.
Do l regret the casualties on both sides in the war, yeah, sure, of course l do.
Do l? Mmm.
Do you actually enjoy those?
Do you feel you ever obstructed justice
Do you know those parties of yours?
Dog food?
Domestic Affairs, Foreign Policy,
Don't let him in.
Don't trade generalizations.
Don't worry about the money.
Don't worry, Bob. l'm on it.
Don't worry, Jim. We'll get him anyway.
Don't worry. l'll call from the restaurant.
Down below him, a liberal America cheered, gloated.
Drone on? Jesus Christ. Where's your respect?
Eh. . .
Ehrlichman could provide the way to deliver it.
Ehrlichman was a key political advisor.
Eight, We've no choice with Hunt
Essentially, it's an attempt to legalize dirty tricks.
Every one individually, collectively,
Every one of those sons of bitches.
Everybody thought l'd be relieved.
Everyone's been kind and deferred fees.
Everything glittered and was golden.
Except, well, you know, it's hard to say
Excuse me, fellas.
Excuse me, sir? Got a room for you right here.
Excuse me, sir.
Excuse me, sir. Something l think you should see.
Excuse me? Shut it down.
Excuse me. One moment, sir.
Face in the dust.
Fellas, this is a critical moment in his life.
Finally, we ended up at some remote point on the coast,
Find out the numbers for this, will you? Worldwide.
Fine. ln which case, the deal is off.
Fine. ln which case, you can expect a lawsuit
Finest deli selection.
Fingerprint them and then throw them in the can.
Fish and chips, please.
Five, Don't you agree that you'd better get the Hunt thing going?
Fixed elections and took us into Vietnam.
FLlGHT ATTEN DANT: Another glass, sir?
For anyone, especially you,
For God's sake.
For God's sake.
For heaven's sake, Jim. Why don't you give him a week off?
For his first interview since he abandoned the White House,
For ourselves, let alone drive.
For Public Radio for the past 1 0 years.
For something in excess of $20 million
For the five burglars caught breaking into
For the interviews.
For the rest of my life.
For this interview, she did a profile on you.
Foreign policy.
Four, Get the million bucks.
Fourth.
Frankly, l don't share any of your sense of pessimism or alarm.
Frankly, we didn't find him appropriate.
From Richard Nixon?
From Richard Nixon?
From the power of the presidency
From the stand up and be counted speech in 1 970?
Frost and Nixon, Frost and Nixon
Frost has hired three crack investigators
Frost is just not in your intellectual class, sir.
FROST: And Jim Reston, one of my researchers.
FROST: Come on. Are they really interested in buying time?
FROST: For the record, l'm gonna be starting with John's idea.
FROST: Next week's guest will be Evonne Goolagong.
FROST: No, never been done before.
FROST: That's fact, this is fiction.
FROST: There you are.
FROST: Well, hello there.
FROST: Well, l shall say so again and again.
FROST: Yeah, well, not really.
FROST: You seemed very confident last time.
GAN NON : People love that story.
GAN NON : So how do we want to address the college protests?
GAN NON : The singer.
GAN NON : Watch your language, for crying out loud.
Gave Nixon a full, free and absolute pardon.
Gee, now, that's a pity.
Gentlemen, finally a friend in the American press.
Gentlemen.
Give him a fucking massage!
Go on. Beat me, John. Beat me with a stick.
Go on. No, say it.
Go right to Khrushchev.
Go together like Mason and Dixon
Go together like Prancer and Vixen
Going to the Federal Courthouse library?
Good evening, and welcome to Great Escapes.
Good evening. This is the 37th time
Good for you.
Good luck. Thank you.
Good morning.
Good night, Mr. Frost.
Good night, sweet princes.
Good with actresses, not so good with stonewalling presidents.
Good.
Good.
Good. Good. Thank you.
Goodbye, Mr. President.
Goodbye, Mr. President.
Goodbye, sir.
Goodbye.
Got it.
Great show, David. Thanks, Noah.
Great, complex ideas, tranches of time.
Great. Russia, China, the big power stuff.
Great. Well, you remember you mentioned
Had a go at Checkers once.
Had l known that, l would have offered him a cup of tea.
Had perhaps not been adequately understood by the American people.
Had the screws put on them by the Speaker of the House.
HALDEMAN: Yeah, he is.
Half his audience is still asleep.
Half his audience is still asleep.
Hang on a second. David, Jack Brennan.
Has a deep religious sensitivity.
Has anyone told you that before?
Has just ruled on the tapes controversy,
Haul them down to the dock,
Have granted, and by these presents do grant,
Have mysteriously been erased.
Have tragedy in their early lives.
Having that facility, that lightness, that charm.
He calls them my Hawaiian burgers,
He certainly knew it halfway through the President's first answer.
He could walk right off the set,
He crashed into curbs.
He did, too. Money no object.
He drove down to San Clemente to say goodbye.
He ended up taking it down to Australia,
He even got back his table at Sardi\s.
He gets to drone on and sound presidential.
He got back all of his shows.
He had the most to gain personally from my stepping down,
He is one of five persons surprised and arrested yesterday
He is to be out.
He must be a little nuts.
He never let on to anyone at the time,
He only escaped jail because of Ford's pardon.
He saved it
He screwed anything that moved, and everything.
He sounds a little emotional.
He switched me to cottage cheese and pineapple instead.
He tried to talk me out of it.
He turns off the gas, and he talks for two hours
He understood television.
He was a sad man and a noble adversary.
He was about to blow and you know it.
He was still absolutely convinced that
He went on teIevision.
He went over speed bumps.
He went twice around my whole estate.
He will drive us all bloody mad.
He wrote a book Now here\s the hook
He'd gone to all the major networks
He'd had a talk show here in the US that had won some awards
He'll be cross examined as if he were on the witness stand.
He'll be right with you. Yeah.
He'll pitch puffballs all night
He's been in these pressure situations many times before.
He's gotta be able to shut him up. Shh.
He's in that truck out there. BREN NAN : Get him in here.
He's taller than l imagined, and tanned.
Hello and good evening and welcome.
Hello, good evening and welcome.
Hello, Mr. Frost.
Hello?
Hello?
Hello.
Hello. Good evening.
Hello. Your house is very beautiful.
Here in Australia, burglars have broken into
Here we go. OFFlCER: Back up behind the curb.
Here you go.
Hey, Bob. FROST: How does that grab you?
Hey, come on in. David's on the phone.
Hey, Mr. Frost. lt's nice to see you.
Hey, you know what would be an interesting thing to find out?
Hey, you know, we got that caviar the Shah of lran sent me.
Hey.
Hey. Hey.
Hey. Take my advice.
Hey. What time is it?
Hippies, draft dodgers, dilettantes,
His farewell speech in the White House?
His last moments as President of the United States,
His most lasting legacy
His notes are there for all to see.
Historic stuff.
Hmm?
Hold on a minute.
Honestly? Far too soft, David.
Hoping for several hefty paydays
How crazy it would be to remove the system,
How crucially important this moment is
How delighted we all are by Mrs. Nixon's recovery.
How do you do?
How do you feel as a Quaker about annihilating an entire people?
How do you know that?
How far do you take executive privilege
How important a test this was of American credibility.
How incongruous.
How kind. Mmm hmm.
How many people has he wiretapped?
How much has it cost?
How much longer are you gonna be in D.C. for?
How much time is devoted to Watergate?
How right you are!
How serious are they?
How to spend $2 million, 2.3 to be precise.
Humiliated all the more for having tried so pitifully hard.
Huston Plan. Wiretapping and alleged abuses of power.
Hygiene obsessive.
I don't give a goddamn what the story is.
I don't think the truth will ever come out.
I don\t understand. Why this sudden change of heart?
I have not. I've already ordered Connally,
I hope you'll all come and see it, and. . .
I recall the President telling me
I remember the day Eisenhower died.
I think it was around this time that Gerald Ford,
I took my seat next to Mrs. Mao at the banquet table.
I want you to direct the most trusted person you have
I'm gonna want to put that in Colson's hands.
I'm hoping that it\ll be that of a cascade of candor.
If l heard some kind of vision
If we allow ourselves a glimpse into that shadowy place we call our soul,
If we have the character to see it through.
If you could please return to your seats and fasten your seat belts,
If you want me to get down on the floor and grovel. . .
If you want me to get down on the floor and grovel. . .
If you were going to make some kind of emotional disclosure,
If you're just going to ignore it right off the bat?
Imagine what he's gonna do with his real achievements.
In a great deal of detail over the course of these interviews,
In American political history would never stand trial.
In damages and loss of earnings.
In four, three, two. Cue David. And. . .
In getting, for a fleeting moment,
In just a few moments now,
In my view, is just depressing.
In our nearly 200 years of history.
In the history of American television.
In the lmmigration Service
In the strictest sense of the law, legal, but you do them
In Washington.
Including wiretapping of newsmen,
Inside the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee
Into the limelight, back onto the winner's podium.
Is a good thing, l'm told.
Is abhorrent to every instinct in my body.
Is because 1 8 and a half minutes
Is that clear? MlTCHELL: Yes, sir.
Is that it simplifies, it diminishes,
Is that l have been wasting my matinee idol looks on radio.
Is that the taping system in the White House
Is the endless round of cocktail parties, social engagements, banquets.
Isn't that the problem?
Isn't that why we're here now? The two of us?
It is a unanimous decision, Doug, eight to zero.
It might be a shame to pass.
It seems your most emotional moment came
It's a Friday night.
It's an eight to zero unanimous opinion.
It's not too many. Just one or two.
It's The Slipper and the Rose.
It's the whole political system and,
It\s a cracker of a movie.
Jack, are we on?
Jack, what are you doing? A break?
Jack. Watergate.
Jeez, please forgive me, Miss Cushing.
Jeopardize the other shows.
Jesus, Jack, it was a joke.
Jesus, that's Hugh Hefner.
Jesus. . .
Jim here teaches at the University of North Carolina
Jim, it\s David.
Jim, well, l've secured 1 2 taping days.
Jimmy! Yes. Yes, back again, like the proverbial bad penny.
John, the place was my canteen !
Jump in with another question.
Just called the feds into my office
Just don't drink any more.
Just go right!
Just imagine it, we'd be our own network for the night.
Just think about it, okay? And call me back.
Just think of the numbers it would get.
Justice Rehnquist took no part in the decision
Keep it about that temperature, okay?
