Miller's Crossing (1990)

Miller's Crossing is a gritty crime film directed by the Coen brothers in 1990. Set in a Prohibition-era city, the story revolves around Tom Reagan, played by Gabriel Byrne, a trusted advisor to the powerful Irish mob boss Leo O'Bannon, portrayed by Albert Finney. As tensions escalate between rival gangs led by Johnny Caspar, played by Jon Polito, and Leo, Tom finds himself caught in the crossfire, forced to navigate a treacherous world of betrayal, deceit, and loyalty.

The film also features stellar performances by John Turturro as the slimy bookie Bernie Bernbaum, Marcia Gay Harden as Tom's love interest Verna Bernbaum, and J.E. Freeman as Eddie Dane, Caspar's enforcer. The Coen brothers masterfully blend elements of neo-noir, dark humor, and intricate plotting, creating a compelling and atmospheric crime thriller.

A dream I had once.
A goddamn mess!
A high roller like you. What do you say?
A hot dog and mustard?
A hot dog...
A lie and no heart.
A little hooch? Whatever?
A little less you talk, a little more you think!
A thousand bucks is fair, so I want two.
A wart. On his fanny. Giving him the fidgets.
Actually, this might not be the best time.
Admit you've got a heart, even though it may be small,
After you left, he tried to sell me on a double cross.
Ah...
Ain't it the life, though?
All in all not a bad guy. If looks, brains and personality don't count.
All right, let me know.
All right, let's go!
All you gotta do to show you're a friend is give me Bernie.
Always put one in the brain.
Always the yapper, huh? Well, you're welcome.
An interesting ethical question.
And all the flowers are dying
And all the roses falling
And don't forget it. Ever.
And down the mountain side
And I can't help remembering that you put the finger on me.
And I must bide
And I shall hear
And I was gonna leave, honest I was. But then I started thinking.
And I will sleep in peace
And I'm just some schnook likes to get slapped around.
And if he's not there?
And tell me that you love me
And that ain't the record either.
And that's how we know it's Bernie Bernbaum, the Shmatte Kid.
And the DA hasn't touched any of your rackets.
And Verna.
And we do the same to Mink this very night!
And we'll see who's smart.
And when you smart me,
And white with snow
And who with.
And you chased it, right?
And you picked it up, but it wasn't a hat anymore.
Another fix? Which fight?
Any other bookies know? You play anyone else's book?
Anyone left in there, come out grabbing air! You know the drill!
Anything to avoid a little dirty work yourself, huh?
Anyways, there's no reason not to check things out.
Are we?
Are you crazy? We're square.
As for you and Verna, well, I understand. You're both young.
As in, he ain't got any.
As mud.
Ask the Dane if I did. Like a psychic.
Ask the Dane if I did. Like a psychic.
Bad play, Leo.
Bawling away like a twist.
Because ethically, he's kind of shaky.
Because if I killed you and you were lying,
Before they could pin your ears back.
Bernie ain't so funny anymore?
Bernie and Mink are cozy as lice. And it ain't just business.
Bernie leaked the fix, and you take the fall for not killing him.
Bernie plays with fire, he must deal with the consequences.
Bernie's dead, isn't he?
Bernie's... Hell, you know about me and Verna.
Big payday Saturday. You could be in on it.
Big turnout. Drop dead.
Birds have been at him. Jesus Christ!
Booked any heavy bets on a long shot at Saturday's fights?
Boss wants you. He didn't have time to engrave nothing formal.
But before I bumped Bernie, he swore that Dane and Mink set him up.
But before you do that, you gotta towel down.
But come ye back
But come ye come
But I ain't that sporting.
But I am, kid.
But I don't know. Why would Eddie cross me like that?
But I figure a deal is a deal. You're square with me,
But I said, Relax, Eddie, I got a feeling about this kid.
But I tell you what, I never crossed a friend.
But I think you was right. Mink and Bernie was in it together.
But if Caspar ain't stiff in a couple of days, I start eating in restaurants.
But more to beat him with! We have faced worse odds!
But still, I'm telling you...
But when I bet with this son of a bitch Bernie Bernbaum,
But you're honest.
By the finish, Tailor Maid had a view of the field.
Can I come in?
Can't raise O'Doole? No, nor the mayor either.
Caspar is as crazy as Leo. And an Eytie into the bargain!
Caspar wants to fix his tiff with Leo, which he'd hardly do if he was warring.
Caspar's gonna be looking for you tomorrow.
Caspar's welcome to this town and my place.
Character.
Choose again.
Christ, Tom.
Christ.
Close your eyes, ladies, I'm coming through.
Come here, bum.
Come on in. Make yourself at home. You weren't here, so I did that.
Come on, Eddie. Friends is a mental state. What do you say, kid?
Comes home crying, saying he had to pop a guy.
Congratulations.
Cross Leo and next time I'll say plenty.
Damn it, I forgive you.
Damn it, Tom. You and me ain't even been talking! Jesus!
Damn right! Had every potato eater on the public tit!
Did Mink have a.22?
Did you put in a good word for my brother?
Did you put one in his brain?
Did you tell him I was here?
Didn't tell you?
Die!
Doesn't matter. I've thought about our deal,
Don't get hysterical.
Don't think, you might sprain something.
Don't worry about Leo, we got plans for him.
Drink, O'Doole?
Drink? I wouldn't mind.
Even Uncle Eddie thinks that's funny.
Everyone is so goddamn smart.
Except you, Tom.
Far as I know, the cops haven't closed your dives,
Fifty fifty on the dough? Or maybe I should get more since I did the deed.
Figured it was a bad idea to wait outside since I'm supposed to be dead.
Find Mink. He can tell us what's what.
First off, I can say what I please to Leo and about him. You can't.
For 1500. More than you owe, but you could use some money on credit,
For a good return, you gotta bet on chance.
For a guy who'd chop you off at the heels for two bits.
For a sheeny, he has good qualities.
Frankie, no! No! Get up, you skell!
Friendship.
From glen to glen
From grifter parents and grandparents. They'll spawn grifter kids.
Funny, ain't it?
Get out of here! Take it on the heel and toe before I whack you one!
Get up and walk. I can't, Frankie. I can't get up.
Get up, you skell!
Giovanni Casparro.
Give me a big guy anytime, they break easy.
Give me a stiff one.
Giving up Bernie was the only way I could fix things for Leo.
Go ahead and run, sweetie. I'll track down all of you whores.
Go ahead. Which hand is the penny in?
Go and see if he fell in the john.
Go down to the drugstore and call the police.
Goddamn it!
Goddamned kids just like a twist.
Good thing the game broke up before you bet your trousers.
Got references? Been to college?
Gutting the golden calf again! I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Have a seat. Go ahead.
He already ditched it. Why?
He didn't know whose stiff we found, but I do.
He knows that.
He likes you, Tom. He said we didn't have to break anything.
He pooped Rug. The day I back down,
He says why don't we give you the bump after we get the Shmatte?
He was scared the Dane'd find out we were jungled up.
He'll sing for a couple grand, but you better take care of the Dane tonight.
He's afraid of crossing the Dane. He told me about the fix.
He's getting his mob together tomorrow night at Whiskey Nick's.
He's got a wart on his fanny.
He's just a cheap political boss with more hair tonic than brains.
He's looking for you.
He's my brother. I don't want him to get hurt.
He's nervous. In the spot he's in, who wouldn't be?
He's selling the information I fixed the fight.
He's trying to say there will be time to talk about that.
Hear that? He's a thinker. That's terrific.
Hell, Leo, I ain't embarrassed to use the word. I'm talking about ethics.
Hello, Bernie. Come on in. Make yourself at home.
Hello, Drop.
Hello, Frankie, it's Tom. How's the flunky business?
Hello, O'Doole. You don't look happy.
Hello, officer. I'd like to report an intruder at 346 West Louis...
Hello, Sal. You can dangle.
Hello, Tad. How's the club holding up?
Hello, Terry. Getting out the vote?
Hello, Tom.
Hello, Tom. Thought I'd do that since you didn't seem to be in.
Hello, Tom. You know O'Doole and the mayor.
Hello, Tommy.
Hello, Tommy. Sorry about the hour.
Help me out. I don't know where to look.
Here.
Hey, Adolph.
Hold it.
Hop in. We've been looking for you.
How are you? Care to sc**** a knuckle on your playmate here?
How come you know about it? Caspar isn't laying any more bets with you.
How do I know you won't kill me?
How do you know I won't still kill you?
How do you know? It ain't Mink. He's Eddie Dane's boy.
How'd you know he'd get it and not me?
Huh?
Huh?
I am a sap.
I am awake.
I am gonna send you to a deep, dark place.
I asked Rug Daniels to follow her around.
I came back and he wasn't happy to see me.
I can do plenty for you. Can you get Leo off me?
I can give them jobs. Good jobs.
I can pay your debt if that would make us friends. A guy can't have too many.
I can see the angles.
I can't die out here in the woods
I can't do it! I'll look ridiculous! It isn't done! Assistants, maybe.
I can't find Bernie. Did you find him?
I can't tell you anything yet.
I couldn't kill you then. Where's Leo?
I did.
I didn't answer the phone, though. Figured it wasn't for me.
I didn't ask for that, and I don't want it.
I didn't give it much thought until now,
I don't ask much and I don't ask often. Trust me on this.
I don't care what reasons you had.
I don't generally care for it, but that's all right.
I don't get it, and I don't care.
I don't know. Do you always know why you do things?
I don't know. It was just a mix up.
I don't make it that way.
I don't want Dane to know, but a guy like Bernie?
I figured maybe you could use some insurance.
I figured you'd come early, looking for blood.
I followed you this afternoon.
I get an angle, I play it. I don't deserve to die. Do you think I do?
I get it.
I get it. Get to the point, huh? The point is, I'm a good guy.
I get it. So you set me up?
I got the right to expect that fight to go off at 3 to 1.
I guess he's well rid of both of us.
I guess I made kind of a fool of myself out there.
I guess I'm saying you gotta put something on the table first. Ante up.
I guess it seems sort of irresponsible, my being here.
I guess it sounds pretty sorry.
I guess that's true.
I guess we both double crossed Leo. There's no getting around that.
I guess you ain't been listening. Sure, other people know.
I guess you didn't see the play you gave me. What am I gonna do?
I guess you must be kind of angry. I'm supposed to be gone.
I guess you picked that fight with me just to tuck yourself in with Caspar?
I guess you think that's a bonehead play.
I guess... I guess I turned yellow.
I happened to be near.
I just wrote this check to Lazarre.
I know
I know I can be pigheaded sometimes, but damn it, so can you!
I know I don't know nothing.
I know it. I just know it.
I know Mink is Eddie Dane's boy, but still I...
I know you don't like it, Tom, but I trust Verna as much as I trust you.
I know you knew protecting the Shmatte was dumb.
I know you think different, but, well, we just differ on that.
I know you're thinking, What's new?
I know you've been wise to all of Leo's dumb ideas.
I know. But that don't mean the Dane's up to anything.
I know. The Dane was disappointed the bulls showed up
I like that. Cool under fire.
I love you so
I make you a nice offer, you give me the high hat.
I mean, it was your gun.
I need a drink.
I need you. Things can be the way they were.
I never crossed a friend, nor you, I'll bet. We're not like those animals.
I never met anyone made being a son of a bitch such a point of pride.
I never say that, and I don't like people who do.
I ought to tell him to skip.
I ought to. I voted for him six times last May.
I reckon I can still trade body blows with any man in this town.
I said we were through. It's not the same thing.
I stay, I got you. Anyone finds out I'm alive,
I suppose you think you raised hell.
I think I'll do that this very same night.
I think Mink heard that you bumped the Shmatte and lit out. Son of a bitch!
I think she does. Of course she does.
I think she does. Of course she does.
I think you'd sooner join a ladies' league than gun a guy down.
I told him you were a tramp and he should dump you.
I told you he was a good kid. All business.
I told you, Dane, we heard two shots.
I used a little information for a chisel, that's all. It's my nature.
I wanna place a bet on tonight's fight.
I wanna see Johnny Caspar cold and stiff.
I wanna see you sweat a little.
I wanna talk to him alone. That's how you get the straight dope.
I want everyone to be friends. I do this, you're friends with Lazarre,
I want me hat.
I want to know why. What was in it for you?
I was in the neighborhood, feeling daffy.
I was walking in the woods, I don't know why.
I was worried. With Caspar, you can't be too careful.
I wondered why Einstein would talk to a gorilla,
I wouldn't want it any other way.
I'd do anything if you'd work for me again!
I'd just squirt a few, and then you'd let me go again.
I'd worry a lot less if I thought you were worrying enough.
I'll do what I must to protect Leo. I'm asking you to leave him alone.
I'll drive him home.
I'll find the Dane, talk to him, straighten it out.
I'll live. What's the rumpus?
I'll see where the twist flops.
I'll sit facing the corner in a funny hat.
I'll square myself with Lazarre. That's why God invented cards.
I'll tell you. But first, you gotta promise not to say, I told you so.
I'll think about it.
I'll try again.
I'm a small timer getting by, like everyone else.
I'm going out, but I'll be back at 4:00 a. m.
I'm impressed.
I'm joking, of course. We know you can be useful to us, a smart kid like you.
I'm just a grifter, Tom. I'm a nobody!
I'm just the chief around here,
I'm leaving tomorrow. All you have to decide
I'm not some guinea fresh off the boat you can kick.
I'm okay.
I'm praying to you, look in your heart.
I'm praying to you.
I'm praying to you.
I'm sick of marching in here to kiss your Irish ass!
I'm talking about character. I'm talking about...
I'm talking about friendship.
I'm too big now. I'm sick of taking the strap from you.
I'm worried, with the way things are with Caspar.
I've got that crazy dago mad at me. Don't ask me why.
I've had enough excitement without a dame going weepy on me.
I've had worse. Your ventilator mending?
If Eddie Dane finds out you got another amigo,
If I am dead
If I leave, I got nothing. No money, no friends, nothing.
If I never see him again, it'll be soon enough.
If I stayed, it wouldn't be good for you.
If I told him about us, your pull would dry up.
If I was a horse, I'd be on my fetlocks praying you don't pick me.
If Leo wants to help, I'll show him a good time. There's no harm.
If old ladies were wanted, you'd have your grandma in line.
If she's such an angel, why are you looking for her at 4:00 a. m.?
If the Dane's been selling you out, he needs someone to blame.
If there's one thing I can't stand, it's a double cross artist!
If we were casting feelings into words, I'd have memorized the Song of Solomon.
If we're banging away at Caspar, let's be ready for him to bang back.
If you appreciated me more, you wouldn't make waves with Leo.
If you call a war, you have more to lose than Caspar.
If you change your mind, we'll be interrogating for a while.
If you got a fixed fight coming up.
If you want me quiet, it'll cost you.
If you're not here with the dough,
If you're on the wrong side, you take your chances.
In the meantime, I'll stay out of sight.
In the woods like a dumb animal! Like a dumb animal! I can't...
Is that your bet or are you placing it for a friend?
Is there a point? Or is this just small talk?
Is this how you taught Drop his story?
Is whether I tell Caspar you're still around.
It ain't complicated.
It had changed into something else, something wonderful.
It isn't easy, is it, Verna?
It makes people choose sides when you look shaky.
It was a smart play all around.
It was Mink, and by God, I'll hear you say it!
It was Mink, you son of a bitch.
It wasn't my idea. You know she'll sleep with anyone.
It worked, whatever you did.
It's a bad time to do that. We're both in a jam.
It's a dream, Tommy! I'm praying to you!
It's a grift. If she didn't need you to protect her brother from Caspar,
It's a mental state.
It's a painful memory.
It's business. A war will hurt everybody.
It's easy enough to find out, eh?
It's ethics. Everything above board,
It's getting so a businessman can't expect no return from a fixed fight.
It's hankie time!
It's just a... It's just a damn mess is all.
It's mine. I won it.
It's not right, Tom! They can't make us do this.
It's not that sinister. A strange man follows her down a dark alley at night.
It's okay, the Dane made him do it.
It's the kiss off.
It's your call. My opinion used to count for something around here.
Jesus Christ, it don't make sense.
Jesus, I open my mouth, the whole world turns smart.
Jesus, Tom, I was just speculating about a hypothesis.
Jesus, Tom.
Jesus!
Jesus! You bring them with you?
Jobs where they won't have to do any work.
Johnny, you're exactly as big as I let you be and no bigger,
Johnny.
Jump on the guinea with both feet. Give him the lowdown.
Just because he's different, people think he's a degenerate, scum.
Just get out of here before I change my mind.
Just me, Mink and my friend, Roscoe. You understand what I'm saying?
Kid, what's the rumpus? I got news.
Kid, you got a lip on you.
Kids. You gotta be firm.
Last night made you look vulnerable.
Lay low until Caspar cools off. Tell him the Dane put you up to it.
Lay off, Tom. You shouldn't go deeper in the hole.
Lazarre said he's sorry about this. It's just getting out of hand.
Lazarre wants his money now. I need a few days.
Leo ain't running things! That's ancient history!
Leo has the right idea. I like him. He's honest and has a heart.
Leo just reminded us that Mr. Caspar operates several clubs in our city,
Leo says he gives no special favors.
Leo says if you're smart, you'll sit this one out, not that he cares.
Leo, I ain't asking for permission. I'm telling you as a courtesy.
Leo's gonna shoot himself in the foot for you.
Let Caspar have Bernie. We're burning our meal ticket here.
Let it drift. It means a lot of people know.
Let me know if you hear anything.
Let us know if you need anything. Yeah, happy days. Have a seat.
Let's do something else first.
Like a dumb animal! I can't
Like I say, you can't have too many.
Like some goddamn Bolshevik picking up his orders from Yegg Central.
Look at this, kid.
Look in your heart I'm praying to you.
Look in your heart, look in your heart.
Look in your heart.
Look in your heart.
Look in your heart. I'm praying to you.
Look in your heart. I'm praying to you.
Looking at you moping around takes away my... What do you call it?
Make him listen. It ain't right, this fuss over one sheeny.
Make sure you're with the good guys. You know how to do this?
Maybe he knew where she was sleeping,
Maybe he's sick of the couch. Your desk don't look like a bad place to move to.
Maybe it was Injuns.
Maybe Rug knew something she didn't want you to know.
Maybe Rug knew something she didn't want you to know.
Maybe you're wrong about this. You don't know what's in her heart.
Maybes don't make it so.
Me.
Message from Leo.
Mink is clean and this clown is a smart guy!
Mink says he's coming after us tonight.
Mink's coming in, so I promised him the money.
Money, okay, everybody likes money, but,
More than the Shmatte, and I'm getting the high hat!
Mother hen, eh? What's the matter?
Mr. Reagan, there were shots!
My chin's hanging out right alongside yours.
My own sister.
Needless to say, this office will do anything
Never without reason. It helps to have one.
No small talk, huh?
No, it didn't happen like that, she'd have told me.
No, it stayed a hat. And, no, I didn't chase it.
No, it's my bet. I just have a good feeling about that fight.
No, we won't be needing any today.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No. Think about it just this once. Who was Rug following?
Nobody asked me, since I'm just the chief, but in my opinion,
Not above the occasional grift. You'd understand that.
Not anymore. Fighting with a psychopath gets you nowhere.
Not at all. I came to hear your side of the story.
Not necessarily.
Not particularly.
Not that I didn't deserve it, but you could've told me.
Not that I haven't been a gentleman, but...
Not that Leo wouldn't help the Shmatte anyway.
Nothing. We're friends. You know, amigos.
Now if you can't trust a fix, what can you trust?
Of course not, you've done your share.
Of course, there's always that wild card when love is involved.
Of course, you know about it.
Of course. The Dane always knows about the fix.
Oh, Danny boy
Okay, give me the needle.
Okay, I get it.
Okay, Johnny.
Okay, Leo. Maybe it wasn't that innocent.
Okay, Leo. Okay. I'll throw him out.
Okay, take him in the woods and whack him.
Okay, Verna. But until then, let's get stinko.
Okay, yeah. Tomorrow night, the fix is in. What of it?
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay.
Okay. Here you go. Take the shiny new penny.
On Sailor Reese, an undercard bum.
Once a guy starts soiling his union suit?
One last question, Drop.
Only a matter of time. That's why we didn't put the arm on you, only Leo.
Or didn't you get that far in school?
Or like anyone.
Or the business I do on his book. He is selling tips on how I bet.
Or when the valley's hushed
Out of town money pours in. The odds go straight to hell.
Out of town money pours in. The odds go straight to hell.
Papa! Papa! I got a prize from the Sisters!
Pin this on the Dane. We don't want him walking around after this.
Put the razor in cold water, not hot, because metal does what in cold?
Recognize your playmate?
Regardless of what you think of me, Bernie's a decent guy.
Retreat to win. Give up Bernie. That'll solve our problems.
Rug was following you. He knew about you and me.
Running things, it ain't all gravy.
Running things.
Saturday's fights. Drop Johnson put two grand on one yesterday.
Scratch, huh? A little bonus.
Sean? Tell O'Doole to get a car to Leo's tonight.
Second, once Leo decides, that's that.
See for yourself. He's coming to my place, 4:00 a. m.
See, the last time we jawed, you gave me the high hat.
She even tried to teach me something about bed artistry. You believe that?
She sees the angle, you, she plays it. She's a grifter, just like her brother.
She was with me, the night Rug was following her,
Shut up!
Shut up! Or maybe you still got too many teeth.
Shut up! You have to disappear for good.
Shut up. Get lost.
Since a guy will say anything when his number's up.
Since you botched that hit, I can only be so grateful.
Sister, when I've raised hell, you'll know it.
Smart guy.
So back we go to these questions.
So don't tell me if you don't wanna, but what's Leo doing?
So everybody knows who's a friend, who's an enemy.
So he hears a rumor that Bernie ain't dead.
So he says, Give him a dollar. This swell lunch was my idea.
So I figure you killed him, angel. You or Saint Bernard.
So I give you Bernie, smooth over Leo, and you pay Lazarre.
So I got you, Tommy.
So I grabbed the gorilla and I beat it out of him.
So I thought I'd drop in for an aperitif.
So it's clear what I'm saying?
So part of the payoff that should ride on my hip rides on someone else's.
So take your flunky and dangle.
So the Dane doesn't like you, but he wouldn't cross me. We go back.
So what am I right about?
So why isn't Eddie Dane here?
So you didn't see Bernie Bernbaum before he was shown across?
So you figure Caspar bumped Rug?
So you've lost your lady friend and her tail?
So, what's in it for you? There's no angle.
Some crackpot idea about saving me from my friends.
Somehow it just don't seem like him.
Something I try and teach all my boys!
Son of a bitch won't go belly up.
Son of a bitch! I'll give you something to holler about!
Son of a bitch! Son of a bitch!
Son of a bitch. No chief. Who's manning the goddamned store?
Sorry don't fix things. We could've missed the corpse, and I'd be dead now.
Sorry, Caspar. Bernie pays for protection.
Sorry, we were chatting, it slipped out.
Sorry. I heard about your ride this morning.
Sounds like a bad break for me I wasn't killed.
Spin her, Eddie!
Start by getting out of here. It's my office!
Start taking Caspar seriously.
Stay there until the officers arrive.
Stop it. I don't like to hear my friends run down.
Stop wailing. Caspar knows you were in on selling out his fix.
Straight as a corkscrew. Mr. Inside outsky,
Sure I do.
Sure.
Swell. Can you hold these?
Tell Caspar it's forgotten. I'd like to see him.
Tell him that, and I'll make Caspar go easy on you.
Tell Lazarre he can send someone over to break me legs. I won't squawk.
Tell Lazarre I want 500 on the nose.
Tell Leo he's not God on the throne.
Telling you would only have queered things if...
Terminal Hotel, Bay Street.
Thanks for coming. Leo's anxious to see you.
Thanks for the drink.
Thanks.
Thanks.
That ain't all we know, smart guy.
That ain't friendly, kid.
That ain't gonna convince us.
That doesn't figure.
That son of a bitch slit his own throat.
That they were the ones who sold out your fix.
That way, you get a first class shave every time.
That's brave, little Miss Punching Bag.
That's confidential now. But it needn't stay that way.
That's fine. Tom and I got the proverbial fat to chew.
That's just it. Nothing. He's disappeared.
That's not good. They're running.
That's okay. Tell him there's no hard feelings.
That's right, Leo. You're the big shot around here.
That's sort of why I'm...
That's the deal, isn't it? You protect Bernie till Caspar cools down?
That's the mailman. O'Doole here?
That's what I mean. Still owe Lazarre money?
That's what you'll do for your friend Bernie.
That's why ethics is important. What separates us from the animals,
That's why we question character to determine who's chiseling in on my fix.
The beasts of burden, beasts of prey, ethics.
The boss didn't say...
The cops won't care what they hang the Dane for.
The Dane made up that rumor himself.
The Dane sells me out, makes pretend Bernie's still doing it.
The Dane wants to double cross you.
The Dane wants you to think he's gone, but he's here in town.
The hell I do.
The kid and Leo are gonna go bust o. Matter of time.
The kid's too smart for Leo. I'm like a psychic.
The man who walks behind the man and whispers in his ear could be useful.
The night you dropped by.
The Shmatte steals from me. I can't have Leo giving him a shiny new penny.
The summer's gone
Then I hear from these two, they never even saw this rubout.
Then I started thinking, that might not be bad for me.
Then make him shut it!
Then why don't we just leave town?
Then you must be happy to see me.
Then you're back with anarchy. Right back in the jungle.
There are plenty of other coppers who wouldn't mind being chief.
There aren't many folks he can point to.
There could be a damn good reason,
There just wasn't any point.
There's a way we do things, hallowed by usage and consecrated by time.
There's more than maybes.
There's nothing keeping you here. There's nothing keeping me.
There's nothing out here!
There's one other thing I want.
They can't make us change. We're not muscle, Tom. I never killed anybody.
They pulled a.22 slug out of him. A woman's gun.
They stop thinking it, you stop running it.
They took his hair. Jesus, that's strange. Why would they do that?
They're planting the sheeny tomorrow. You can stop by.
Things now are...
Think about this,
Think about what protecting Bernie gets us and what offending Caspar loses us.
Third race tonight.
This guy is all wrong.
This is not us. This is some hop dream!
This is too important.
Tho' soft you tread above me
Though one day you'll pay the price for it.
To 1, more than likely.
To assist you and your cousins.
To keep her out of trouble. Wasn't to spy.
To me
To Volstead.
Tom Reagan here.
Tom Reagan. Mr. Caspar is in the great room.
Tom,
Tom! Tom! Jesus, are you part of this?
Tommy!
Truth is, Tad, no reason on earth.
Until you come
Up is down. Black is white.
Verna turned up. She's downstairs.
Verna wouldn't panic, shoot someone for following her.
Very smart. What were you doing at the club? Talking with Leo?
Very sweet. You were out at Miller's Crossing with your face blown off.
Wake up, Tommy.
Want another one?
We can table that for a later day.
We can't get enough of that in this business.
We can't. He'll spill the whole setup.
We could start with the Shmatte. Where's the Shmatte?
We did it for Leo on countless occasions.
We got a deal?
We got nothing on each other.
We only take yeggs what's been to college. Ain't that right, Dane?
We're a couple of heels, Tom. Yes, we are.
We're managing without you.
We're quits as far as I'm concerned.
Well, at least she didn't hit me.
Well, find him, goddamn it!
Well, he don't care for you, kid. Maybe it's only fair to tell you.
Well, I think you're half smart.
Well, like you say, a guy will say anything.
Well, no harm done. Unless your friend broke his foot.
Well, we'll go out to Miller's Crossing.
What about the fighters that tank out? We only pick those we can threaten.
What are you chewing over?
What are you doing? You're going to Miller's Crossing.
What did I want?
What did Rug say?
What did you tell him?
What did you tell Leo?
What do you mean he's eating too much? What's the goddamn doctor know?
What does that mean?
What is this? What the hell are you talking about?
What the hell does that mean?
What were you gonna do?
What, you got nothing to crack wise about?
What's going on with you and Bernie?
What's on your mind, Bernie?
What's that potato eater up to? Beats me.
What's the matter, aren't we friends anymore?
What's the matter, doesn't anything ever suit you?
What's the rumpus?
When I fix a fight, say I pay a 3 to 1 favorite to throw a fight,
When summer's in the meadow
When we hooked people up when Leo was running things...
When you're right, you're right, but you never say, I told you so.
When?
Where are your friends when you need them?
Where I am lying
Where is Bernie?
Where's Leo now?
Whereas Bernie Bernbaum is a horse of a different color, ethics wise.
Wherein the patrons imbibe rum and play games of chance.
Who gave him that idea? I did.
Who was that?
Who's this? Hello, Shad.
Why did Mink shoot Rug, anyway?
Why didn't you say so?
Why didn't you say what you're up to? I thought you'd really gone over.
Why not?
Why the hell should I tell you?
Wind kept moving, blew me hat off.
Would that be physically or just a mental state?
Wrong, Leo. You do things for a reason.
Yeah, all of it.
Yeah, do that.
Yeah, go keep the mayor company. I'll take care of youse later.
Yeah, I can see that.
Yeah, so what?
Yeah, that's it.
Yeah, then we're all friends again. You, me, Leo, the Dane.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah. I want me hat.
You always take the long way around to get what you want.
You are a millionaire. You gonna remember your friends?
You are so goddamn smart. Except you ain't.
You bump the Shmatte, I hold up my end.
You bumped Bernie Bernbaum.
You can't do this! You don't bump guys!
You can't hijack me, we're on the same side,
You can't just shoot me like that.
You could've just asked.
You didn't give Leo this double talk!
You didn't. I know. You didn't shoot me, but...
You don't know that. It don't make sense. Why would he?
You don't like me seeing Leo because you're jealous.
You don't mean that.
You double cross once, where's it all end?
You dumping Leo for the guy who put a bullet in your brother?
You expect me to believe you?
You find Mink, you bring him back here.
