Rear Window (1955)

Rear Window (1955)

"Rear Window" is a classic thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and released in 1954. Set entirely within the confines of a small apartment, the movie follows the life of a wheelchair-bound photographer named L.B. Jeffries, played by James Stewart. As Jeffries recuperates from a broken leg, he becomes obsessed with observing his neighbors through his rear window, slowly discovering what he believes to be evidence of a murder. Grace Kelly plays Lisa Fremont, Jeffries' stylish and inquisitive girlfriend, who becomes caught up in his dangerous investigation.

Hitchcock masterfully builds suspense as the tension escalates, making the audience feel like voyeuristic accomplices. The film explores themes of the gaze, obsession, and the sinister nature of suburban life. Bernard Herrmann's haunting score adds to the suspenseful atmosphere, as it captures the film's sense of urgency and danger.

If you want to experience the gripping allure of "Rear Window," you can watch the movie and immerse yourself in its soundscape. Play and download the iconic score, creating an eerie ambiance that will transport you to the thrilling world of Hitchcock's masterpiece.

A great big glassful. There's a corkscrew right over there.
A kidney ailment has no relationship to the stock market.
A little business meeting...
A lot of things. She's an invalid. She demands constant care.
A murderer would never parade his crime in front of an open window.
A possibility. A possibility. It's a fact!
A shovel? Of course I don't have a shovel.
A steal at $1, 100.
A woman has a favorite handbag
About every little thing you see, is diseased!
According to those witnesses.
After she arrived in Merritsville,
All day long, I've been trying to keep my mind on my work.
All it did was make the heat wet.
All right if I have a drink?
All right, but what's he doing now?
All right, fellows, let's try it once from the beginning.
All right, Officer, do your duty. Go over and pick him up.
All right.
All right.
All right.
All right. All right. Now hurry up, will you?
All right. Good night.
All right. I take it you didn't find the trunk,
All right. Make sure you don't get caught, that's all.
All right. Now you tell me where she is.
All right. What is it now?
All right. What's it all about, Jeff?
All the telephone calls he made were long distance, all right?
All those trips at night with that metal suitcase,
Amusing the neighborhood with his sleight of hand. Don't tell me that.
An old, ornery friend of mine.
And a small saw
And all this is from an old speech you once made at the Policemen's Ball.
And at last I know
And besides, you're not up on your private eye literature.
And come back three times?
And do the Dance of the Seven Veils every hour.
And don't sleep in that chair again.
And he walked along the corridor and the street and the backyard.
And I love you and I'll see you
And I see you all the time
And I see you everywhere
And I would have been awakened to a rude disillusionment.
And I'll spread a little common sense on the bread.
And I'll tell you something else.
And I'm afraid it's with me.
And if she wasn't coming back, why didn't he tell his landlord?
And is still going on?
And it always hangs on her bedpost, where she can get at it easily.
And just one dream remains
And Lisa Fremont is the right girl for any man with half a brain
And lots of men don't speak to their wives all day.
And mysterious trips at night and knives and saws and ropes.
And not sit around analyzing each other like two specimens in a bottle.
And now this wife that isn't there anymore.
And now, since last evening, not a sign of the wife.
And that jewelry.
And that's when I ordered dinner.
And that's where you're not being clever.
And the garbage disposal and the nagging wife.
And the judge says, "Well, congratulations.
And the last thing she would leave behind would be a wedding ring.
And the last week must be the hardest. Let me, sir.
And the nylons and those six ounce lingerie.
And the over passionate daughters of the rich?
And the phrase, "Search warrant issued by a judge
And then he wouldn't need a knife and saw.
And then I had to dash back and change.
And then I had to go to '21 ' and have lunch with the Harper's Bazaar people.
And then I'll never be able to go anywhere.
And then just a plain gold band.
And then, all of a sudden, she goes away on a trip and leaves it behind. Why?
And there's six volumes.
And they don't care anything about a couple of house rules.
And they don't leave it behind, either.
And they got no windows in the workhouse.
And Thorwald's a man, Tess, don't worry.
And toss her in the trunk and put her in storage.
And what did you find inside the trunk? A surly note to me?
And what you think it means.
And when I want a man, I want all of him.
And where she's going, she wouldn't need the handbag.
And why didn't he go to work today?
And you a big assignment.
And you and your friend, Doyle.
And you reward me by stealing my assignments.
And you're never out of sight
And your love life?
And your stomach?
Anna... Is that who I think it is?
Any of those bikini bombshells you're always watching worth a red hot poker?
Any place I look you're there
Anything else bothering you?
Are you interested in solving this case or in making me look foolish?
Are you tired?
Aren't as tall as they were.
As a matter of fact, I don't.
As always.
Asked somebody's advice over the telephone.
At least
At least that's something you'll never have to worry about.
At least you can't say the dinner isn't right.
At the risk of sounding stuffy, I'd like to remind you of the Constitution
Baloney.
Because his possessions are still up in the apartment.
Because it knew too much?
Because she didn't know she was going on a trip.
Because somebody got unfavorable publicity from your camera?
Because you're hiding something from me, then maybe I can understand.
Before you turn into a lonesome and bitter old man.
Big enough?
Bloody footsteps leading up to the door?
Boy, it's good to be home.
Boy, you should have seen her. She got into Thorwald's apartment.
Bring it. And bring me the viewer there.
But dream forever
But I can back it up if you'd just shut up for a minute.
But I can tell you one thing.
But I couldn't imagine any of you being so low
But I'll tell you this,
But if you don't stop it, I'm getting out of here.
But if you'd told me you'd quit your job, we wouldn't have gotten married.
But in real life, it's still a fairy tale.
But it's just a picture of the backyard, that's all.
But none of you do!
But now just one song
But she was not Mrs. Thorwald.
But then he came back, and the only way I could get her out was to call the police.
But this all started because you said she was murdered.
But very, very few of them end up in murder, if that's what you're thinking.
But when I do, it's gonna be to someone who thinks of life
But you're not? Look.
By a special, private little group of anointed people.
By all means.
By Mrs. Anna Thorwald.
By the murderer himself, Thorwald.
Bye, Jeff.
Call Lieutenant Doyle.
Can you get me that ring back?
Can you imagine her traveling around the world with a camera bum
Can you see me driving down to the fashion salon in a jeep,
Care if anybody lives or dies.
Careful, Tom.
Caresses I'm burning for
Cheers.
Chelsea 27099.
Chelsea.
Clean, well packed. Not stylish, but presentable.
Coffee will be ready soon.
Come here.
Come on, come on, Tom.
Come on, come on! Get out of there!
Come on, get out of sight. Get out of sight.
Come on, get out of sight. Get out of sight.
Come on, Stella, let's go.
Come on. Let's go back in. It's only a dog.
Come on. Quit stalling, Thorwald, or I'll hang up and call the police.
Compact, but ample enough.
Congratulations, Jeff.
Consult the Yellow Pages in your telephone directory.
Crashed, didn't it?
Creele! Give me your.38!
Creele! Give me your.38!
Deliberately repulsive? I'm just trying to make it sound good.
Depends on who they were.
Did he say what was buried in the flower bed?
Did I get the wrong day?
Did Mr. Doyle think I stole this case?
Did you ever eat fish heads and rice?
Did you ever get sandbagged at night
Did you ever get shot at? Did you ever get run over?
Did you ever get shot at? Did you ever get run over?
Did you ever own a saw?
Did you ever try to keep warm in a C 54 at 15,000 feet, 20 degrees below zero?
Did you ever... Those high heels, they'll be great in the jungle.
Did you get my note?
Did you hear from him again, since he left?
Did you kill him because he liked you?
Did you say "murder," Jeff?
Didn't you take them off to the crime lab?
Do it right away.
Do that.
Do you ever heat that stuff?
Do you have that listless feeling?
Do you like it?
Do you... Do you suppose it's ethical,
Does that make me sound like a madman?
Don't laugh. I could do it.
Don't rush him. We have all night.
Don't stay up too late.
Don't!
Doyle, don't tell me he's an unemployed magician,
Doyle, I've got something really big for you.
Doyle!
Drown me in kisses
Eleven hundred?
Empty as a football.
Even his wife's... That alligator handbag
Even if I had to pay, it would be worth it. Just for the occasion.
Even if you prove that he didn't commit a crime?
Every man's ready for marriage when the right girl comes along.
Expensive restaurants and literary cocktail parties.
Eyes are all bloodshot.
Father loading up the shotgun?
Feel a little foolish?
Few people are.
Fifty cents.
Find the trunk. Mrs. Thorwald's in it.
Fine, thanks.
First you smash your leg, then you get to looking out the window,
Flashlights.
Flat statements, no hesitation. They jived with the letter.
For getting rid of that cast.
For instance?
For three years during the war?
For what?
For what?
For yourself and me.
Forget all about this.
Forget I called.
Fremont.
Gee, I'm proud of you!
Get along.
Get away from there. Get away from there. He'll be after you.
Get back! Get back!
Get back! He'll see you.
Get me the police, sixth precinct.
Get my billfold out of the drawer in the table there.
Get my medical bag from upstairs.
Getting all twisted and scratched and tangled up.
Give him evidence.
Gives your circulation something to fight.
Go ahead, just as long as you tell me what you're looking at.
Go on, into the house. Into the house.
Go on, pick it up, Thorwald.
Go on, pick it up.
Go on, you're curious.
Go over there and search Thorwald's apartment.
Good evening, Mr. Jefferies. Carl.
Good morning. I said, "Good morning!"
Good night, you idiot. Good night.
Good night.
Good night.
Good night. Good night.
Goodbye, Jeff.
Goodbye, Mr. Jefferies. See you tomorrow.
Got a code tip from the bureau chief this morning.
Got to carry you over the threshold.
Grab that. The rest of the blanket. Wait, I'll get the clock.
Great conversationalist.
Guess I'd better start setting up for dinner.
Gunnison, how did you ever get to be such a big editor with such a small memory?
Harry?
Harry.
Hasn't gone near the bedroom.
Have a pleasant dinner, Mr. Jefferies.
Have started "under the gun," as you might say.
Have you checked his bank statements lately?
Haven't raised your temperature one degree in a month.
He better get that trunk out of there before it starts to leak.
He doesn't seem to be in any hurry.
He doesn't sound like much of a detective.
He had his wife's jewelry in the handbag.
He had it hidden in the dresser. At least, it was there.
He has a six months' lease.
He has it. Good night.
He killed a dog last night because the dog was scratching around in the garden.
He killed her in there, he has to clean up those stains before he leaves.
He likes the way his wife welcomes him home.
He lives alone. Probably had a very unhappy marriage.
He might have gotten a hold of something when he said
He must ask for evidence.
He must be still at it.
He said he was gonna check the railroad station and the trunk.
He took it out, went to the telephone and made a long distance call.
He wasn't taking out his possessions,
He went out a few minutes ago in his undershirt, hasn't come back yet.
He went out several times last night in the rain, carrying his sample case.
He'd throw the New York State penal code right in my face.
He'll be back. His things are still there.
He'll know, he'll know.
He's alive.
He's been laying out all his things on one of the beds.
He's coming back!
He's getting ready to pull out for good. Look at him.
He's gonna run out on her, the coward.
He's got his wife's jewelry hidden in his clothes in the bedroom over there.
He's in there now. There's nothing to see.
He's just sitting in the living room in the dark.
He's not gonna wait around forever. Hurry up.
He's packing.
He's quiet, drinks, but not to drunkenness.
He's still sitting around the apartment. That man's not panicked.
He's washing down the bathroom walls.
Hello, this is L. B. Jefferies speaking. I'm a friend of Mr. Doyle.
Hello?
Hello? Hello, Miss Doyle?
Hello.
Hello. Hello. Look, a man is assaulting a woman at 125 West 9th Street.
Hello. Hello. Tom, I think Thorwald's left. I don't see...
Hello. Lieutenant Doyle, sir?
Hello. Lieutenant Doyle.
Hello...
Here we go.
Here, get me a pencil.
Here, give me the phone book.
Here, I'll do it.
Here, now you take a look. Tell me what you see.
Here, take this.
Here's the key. Thank you.
Hey! Rain.
Hi. Hello.
His personal effects.
His wife had on the bedpost. What about it?
His wife was sick in bed.
Hmm?
Hmm.
Hmm.
Hold everything. Don't do anything foolish.
Hold me and whisper the sweet words I'm yearning for
Homework. It's more interesting.
Honey. Come on.
How about this morning? Any further developments?
How about this morning? Any further developments?
How can you tell from a thermometer?
How did we ever stand each other in that plane
How do you do?
How far does a girl have to go before you'll notice her?
How happy endings start
How long do you think he'll stay there?
How many people did you cut up with it?
How much do you need?
How much does she have?
How would I run it from, say, ****stan?
How?
How'd you know?
How's that for a bit of homespun philosophy?
How's your leg?
How's your wife?
Huh?
I admit it all has a mysterious sound. It could be any number of things.
I can see you in court now,
I can smell trouble right here in this apartment.
I can take pictures from a jeep or a water buffalo, if necessary.
I can't do that, even if he isn't there.
I can't do that.
I can't fit in here. You can't fit in there.
I can't tell you what a welcome sight this is.
I can't tell you what this music has meant to me.
I can't think of anything more boring or tiresome than what you've been through,
I can't. The police have it by now.
I checked the railroad station. He bought a ticket.
I could get you a dozen assignments tomorrow.
I could see you looking very handsome and successful in a dark blue flannel suit.
I didn't ask you to stand in the middle of that automobile racetrack.
I do declare.
I do? Sure.
I don't care if you help me or not,
I don't know how many wasted years I've spent
I don't know what you consider it,
I don't know what you mean.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know. What's she doing? Where is she?
I don't think so. I don't think so.
I don't want any part of her.
I dreamed many dreams
I figured a good detective would jump at the chance of something to detect.
I found the trunk a half hour after I left here.
I get myself half killed for you,
I got a nose for trouble. Can smell it ten miles away.
I got two words of advice for you. Marry her.
I guess I'll go over to the railroad station and check on Thorwald's story.
I guess I'm not the girl I thought I was.
I hate to remind you,
I have one now.
I have only $100 or so.
I have the whole weekend off.
I hope I took something else besides leg art. Now which one...
I hope I'll never wake
I hope it's gonna be a hit. This is the first release.
I hope they're cooked this time.
I hope you don't mind.
I just don't want you two to end up like that dog ended up. That's all.
I just got a...
I just want to find out what's the matter with the salesman's wife, that's all.
I just... I'm not ready for marriage.
I knew it.
I know, a lesser man would have told me it was one long holiday,
I know.
I made a simple statement, a true statement,
I mean what I said.
I mean, according to you, people should be born, live and die on the same spot!
I mean, like the kitchen and make us some coffee.
I mean, you're taking all the chances.
I might have quite a surprise for him.
I need a woman who's willing to... Hold it.
I picked that up in Shanghai, which has also seen better days.
I see.
I see. I'd say this is a pretty convenient guy, this superintendent.
I see. Thank you. Goodbye.
I sent somebody over with the bail money.
I sent them on their merry and legal way.
I suppose it's normal for a man to tie up a trunk with heavy rope?
I sure wish he'd show up.
I think he was taking something out of the apartment.
I think I know why Thorwald killed that dog.
I think that's about the time I fell asleep.
I thought Doyle would be here by the time the trunk left,
I told you to be careful, Tom.
I told you... I know you told me!
I told you... Oh, no!
I was all morning in a sales meeting,
I was nursing a director of General Motors.
I will rephrase the question.
I wish I could be creative.
I wish there was one I wanted.
I won't be able to give you any pajamas.
I won't report this to the department. Let me poke into it a little on my own.
I wonder if it's ethical to watch a man with binoculars and a long focus lens.
I wonder where he's going.
I wonder...
I would say it looked as if she wasn't coming back.
I wouldn't dare answer that.
I'd like to see your friend's face when we tell him.
I'd love to hear it.
I'd say she's doing a woman's hardest job. Juggling wolves.
I'll be glad when they crack that cast, and I can get out of here.
I'll bet it's been done.
I'll bet yours isn't this small.
I'll drop by.
I'll give you a chance to find out.
I'll go along with that.
I'll have him call the moment I hear from him.
I'll keep an eye on the alley.
I'll probably get married one of these days,
I'll see if I can get about 15 minutes.
I'll send Morgan or Lambert.
I'll tell you why he didn't tell his landlord. Because he was hiding something.
I'll trade you...
I'm at the Albert now. I'll be looking for you.
I'm going to stay with you.
I'm gonna bail Lisa out of jail.
I'm gonna do something drastic.
I'm gonna ring it right now!
I'm in love with you. I don't care what you do for a living.
I'm just gonna get the name off that freight truck.
I'm just warming some brandy. Mr. Doyle, I presume?
I'm not exactly on the other side of the room.
I'm not hiding anything. It's just that...
I'm not much on rear window ethics.
I'm not shy. I've been looked at before.
I'm not stubborn. I'm just truthful.
I'm sending up a plain, flat, silver one with just your initials engraved.
I'm sorry, Jeff. I got here as fast as I could!
I've handled enough of those red pills to put everybody in Hackensack
I've seen bickering and family quarrels
I've seen him in the backyard, fixing the flowers...
If he calls in, would you have him get in touch with L.B. Jefferies right away?
If I see him coming back, I'll signal with a flashbulb.
If I were caught in there, they'd have my badge within 10 minutes.
If she was only ordinary.
If that ring checks out, we'll give him an escort.
If that woman was alive, she'd be wearing that ring. Right?
If this is dreaming
If you don't find anything, the fellow's clear.
If you don't pull me out of this swamp of boredom,
If you say anything else, I'll stay tomorrow night, too.
If you want to get vicious on this thing, I'd be very happy to accommodate you.
If you'd sleep in bed at night instead of in that wheelchair.
If you're saying all this because you don't want to tell me the truth,
If your opinion is as rude as your manner, I don't think I care to hear it.
Important, huh?
In a plot of ground about one foot square.
In full view of 50 windows?
In my neighborhood, they still nag.
In the same old dream
In the sunrise In the moon glow
In the whole courtyard, only one person didn't come to the window.
In this heat? Yeah.
In you go.
In your arms, oh, Lisa
In your favorite handbag.
Instead of an insurance company nurse.
Intelligence.
Is among the jewelry he has in that handbag?
Is he cleaning house?
Is he okay?
Is made from things that you couldn't even look at when they're alive.
Is that so?
Is that so? Is that so?
Is that...
Is this the Lisa Fremont who never wears the same dress twice?
Is to know you by heart
Is to take out a subscription to your magazine.
Is what you want something you can discuss?
Isn't it time you came home? You could pick your assignment.
Isn't there anybody in the neighborhood who could cast an eye in her direction?
It depends which one.
It doesn't make sense to me.
It doesn't make sense.
It hurts a little.
It just might be that the salesman will be available soon.
It must be knee deep in evidence.
It was in her favorite handbag.
It would be the wrong thing.
It'll get her out of there, won't it?
It'll wear off, along with the hallucinations.
It's a detective's nightmare.
It's a Montrachet.
It's a secondhand version of an unsupported story
It's about time you got married,
It's almost as if it were being written especially for us.
It's basic equipment.
It's been strangled. The neck is broken.
It's called "Hunger."
It's cracked and you never use it. It's too ornate.
It's dead.
It's deflating to find out the only way I can be part of it
It's funny. He never ends up marrying her, does he?
It's going on right here. It's a big night.
It's happened before, you know.
It's in a hat box over in his apartment.
It's just a little neighborhood murder, that's all.
It's just an old run of the mill Wednesday. The calendar's full of them.
It's just like being a tourist on an endless vacation.
It's opening night of the last depressing week of L.B. Jefferies in a cast.
It's pretty hard for you to keep away from that word, isn't it?
It's ridiculous to say that it can only be done
It's right off the Paris plane. Do you think it'll sell?
It's taken a hundred trained police minds to catch them.
It's utterly beautiful.
Jeff, aren't you going to tell him about the jewelry?
Jeff, did you hear what I said? You're beginning to scare...
Jeff, I'll be honest with you. You're beginning to scare me a little.
Jeff, if you could only see yourself!
Jeff, if you're squeamish, just don't look.
Jeff, the handbag!
Jeff, you don't have to be deliberately repulsive just to impress me I'm wrong.
Jeff, you know, if someone came in here, they wouldn't believe what they'd see.
Jeff, you've got a lot to learn about homicide.
Jeff!
Jeff!
Jeff! Jeff!
Jeff! Well, here they come.
Jeff. Hi.
Jeff...
Jefferies.
Jefferies.
Jewelry?
Just a minute, Carl.
Just a minute. Hurry up!
Just because he liked you?
Just go home.
Just have him get over here as soon as he can.
Just hold on. Here, take this.
Just how did you do that, Stella?
Just how would you start to cut up a human body?
Just put everything in the oven, Carl, on low.
Just where do you suppose he cut her up?
Just where he's being clever. He's being nonchalant about it.
Kashmir.
Kept to himself. None of his neighbors got close to him or his wife.
L.B. Jefferies.
Laid out over there in the bedroom, waiting to be packed.
Lars Thorwald is no more a murderer than I am.
Lars Thorwald.
Leg in the East River... Oh, Stella, please!
Let go of me! Jeff!
Let her find somebody else.
Let me do it.
Let's go inside.
Let's start from the beginning again, Jeff.
Let's wait till it gets a little darker, and I'll go over there and dig them up.
Lieutenant Doyle! Yeah?
Like an old ham bone?
Like disposing of their wives?
Like Mrs. Thorwald's wedding ring. That's like what.
Like staying here all night uninvited.
Like what?
Like what? Like what?
Lisa Fremont.
Lisa, angels dance when you cling to me
Lisa, every touch is new ecstasy
Lisa, in this job you carry one suitcase.
Lisa, what are you doing? Don't go...
Lisa, what are you... Don't do...
Lisa, with your starry eyes
Lisa!
Lisa!
Lisa! Doyle!
Lisa? Lisa, back there, on that shelf, there's a little yellow box. You see it?
Lisa's handbag. Yeah.
Lisa's loaded to her fingertips with love for you.
Listen to me! Listen to me! Lisa's in jail. She got arrested.
Long distance again.
Long distance.
Look at this. Isn't that amazing?
Look out, Lisa. He's coming.
Look, he's got everything he owns
Look, I don't know what pet names Thorwald had for his wife,
Look, I got $20 or so in my purse.
Look, if I'd have been careful piloting that reconnaissance plane during the war,
Look, Jeff! Don't louse up my night with another mad killer...
Look, look, Mr. Jefferies.
Look, Mr. Jefferies, I'm not an educated woman,
Look, right? Those two yellow zinnias on this end
Look, the wedding ring!
Look! Look, over in that apartment!
Look.
Look. Look. Look.
Look. What?
Looks like Thorwald's pulling out tonight.
Looks like you packed in a hurry.
Lots of people have knives and saws and ropes around their houses.
Lots of wives nag and men hate them and trouble starts,
Luminous dials for watches. House numbers that light up.
Mailed 3:30 yesterday afternoon from Merritsville.
Make the one you want.
Many dreams ago
Many dreams ago
Maybe he's leaving his wife. I don't know. I don't care!
Maybe I can get him out of that apartment.
Maybe it's the knife and saw. Yeah.
Maybe one day she'll find her happiness.
Maybe she died.
Maybe you won't need it.
Meet me in the bar at the Albert Hotel.
Men, are you over 40?
Message went, "Arrived okay. Already feeling better.
Mind if I use that portable keyhole?
Miss Lonelyheart.
Miss Lonelyheart.
Miss Lonelyheart's just laid out something
Miss Torso, for example...
Mmm hmm.
Mmm.
Modern marriage.
Morgan or Lambert. That's fine.
Most everything's been done, under panic.
Mousseline de soie... Oh, Italian?
Mr. Doyle, that can only lead to one conclusion.
Mr. Jefferies, the music stopped her.
Mr. Thorwald could scarcely put his wife's body
Mrs. Anna Thorwald.
Mrs. Thorwald? No.
Mrs. Thorwald.
