Zander the Great is a 1925 American silent comedy-drama film directed by George W. Hill, marking his first directing role for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). The screenplay, adapted by Frances Marion, is based on Edward Salisbury Field's 1923 play of the same name. The film stars Marion Davies as Mamie Smith, an orphan who, after being mistreated in an orphanage, is taken in by Mrs. Caldwell and her young son, Alexander, whom she nicknames "Zander." Following Mrs. Caldwell's death, Mamie strives to protect Zander from returning to the abusive orphanage. The cast includes Holbrook Blinn as Juan Fernández, Harrison Ford as Dan Murchison, and Hedda Hopper as Mrs. Caldwell. The film is preserved at the Cinematheque Royale de Belgique, Library of Congress, and the Museum of Modern Art.
