"The Letter" is a 1929 American pre-Code drama directed by Jean de Limur, adapted from W. Somerset Maugham's 1927 play. The film stars Jeanne Eagels as Leslie Crosbie, a woman living on a rubber plantation in Singapore who becomes entangled in a tragic love affair. When her lover, Geoffrey Hammond, abandons her for another woman, Leslie shoots and kills him, claiming self-defense. However, a letter she wrote to Geoffrey prior to the incident becomes central to her trial, leading to unexpected consequences. The film is notable for being the first full-sound feature shot at Astoria Studios in Queens, New York City.
