The Canary Murder Case is a 1929 American pre-Code crime-mystery film based on S.S. Van Dine's 1927 novel. Directed by Malcolm St. Clair and Frank Tuttle, the film stars William Powell as detective Philo Vance, investigating the murder of a scheming showgirl known as "The Canary," portrayed by Louise Brooks. Jean Arthur plays Alice LaFosse, and James Hall portrays Jimmie Spottswoode. The film was released by Paramount Pictures on February 16, 1929, and was notable for being one of the early sound films, though it was initially produced as a silent film before being converted into a "talkie."
