In 2009, the film Brüno was released, based on another of Baron Cohen's characters, a gay Austrian fashion reporter. Rupert Murdoch announced in February 2007 that Baron Cohen had signed on to do another Borat film with Fox. However, Baron Cohen himself stated that Borat was to be discontinued, as he was now too recognizable to prevent detection. In September 2020, a direct sequel, titled Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, was officially confirmed to have been secretly filmed, completed and screened during the COVID-19 pandemic.
