Cicada Collection

The sound of a cicada is a unique and distinct one, often heard during the warm summer months. This is the rare sound of a 7 or 17 year cicada, one of the rarest of the 250 known cicada species. These bugs, which I have very fond memories of as a child, can and do stay hidden underground for years before emerging to sing their deafening chorus. The high-pitched buzzing sound of the cicada is a symbol of summer in many parts of the world, and is both loved for its nostalgic reminder of warm days and loathed for its relentless noise.

Cicadas are known for their loud and persistent chirping, which can reach up to 120 decibels. The sound they produce is created by the rapid vibration of their tymbals, which are drum-like organs located on their abdomens. This sound is not only a means of communication between cicadas, but also serves to attract mates and ward off predators. The cacophony of cicadas can be overwhelming at times, but is also a natural part of the ecosystem in which these insects play a vital role.

A cicada flew in my front door a few weeks ago and so I grabbed it and kept moving him around just inches from the mic trying to make him make some noises. This is just one of them. The sound of a single cicada can be surprisingly loud and piercing, especially when heard up close. The rapid pulsing sound of their wings as they flutter and buzz in flight is an unmistakable sound of summer. Despite their small size, cicadas are capable of creating a sound that carries over long distances, filling the air with their unique song.

The song of the cicada is a complex and varied one, with different species producing distinct sounds. Some cicadas create a rhythmic buzzing or clicking sound, while others produce a more continuous hum. The sound of the cicada can be both soothing and irritating, depending on one's perspective. For some, the sound of cicadas is a comforting backdrop to lazy summer days, while for others it is an incessant noise that can be difficult to tune out.

Overall, the sound of the cicada is a symphony of nature that adds to the rich tapestry of sounds in the outdoors. Whether you love them or hate them, there is no denying the unique and unmistakable sound of the cicada. If you are curious to hear the sounds mentioned above, you can play and download them here. Enjoy the enchanting melodies of these fascinating insects and immerse yourself in the vibrant world of the cicada.
