A lot of the crowd realized they could do whatever they wanted
After what we had been through with Korn the night before…
All my crew and the people from the record company,
All right, y'all. From the front to the back like this.
All right. Let's bring it out.
Although, I don't know.
And "we're all in it, this, together," sense of community.
And a line of people behind them.
And actually move you along like they're supposed to be.
And at one point, we had a big barbecue going.
And come Saturday, they were pissed.
And even though I knew that I had to work the next day,
And for every person you had inside the building,
And go out and hand them out.
And he just goes, "My name is Kid!"
And he throws it off, and it was like James Brown type stuff.
And her pants were down to her ankles.
And I could see a guy was driving.
And I could see trash every place.
And I knew that we were looking at a disaster
And I knew we had a problem.
And I remember looking out of the office window
And I said, "How was it?" I'm thinking it was great.
And I said, "That is gonna be the downfall of Woodstock '99,
And I said, "Well, this is a different kind of Woodstock."
And I saw it get increasingly
And I take a look in the mirror, and my eyeballs are the size of cue balls.
And I was like, "Who has a joint? Let's smoke."
And I'm like, "What is wrong with me?"
And if I need to get pumped? Absolutely I rock out to that.
And it was accepted.
And it was one of the most important events of my life.
And it was working.
And it's like, "We gotta stop the music. The van's gotta go."
And it's the hottest part of the hottest day of the year.
And just decided it wasn't one of those days,
And me wanting to make everybody love each other,
And Michael and John, they were not really paying attention
And most of them are naked. It's an invitation for trouble.
And overflowing if there were any.
And people started throwing things at him and at me.
And people were seeking it out everywhere.
And ruin our fun. We wanna be free."
And seeing what looked like a couple of lights
And she went away in an ambulance.
And slept at the airport until our flight the next day.
And sort of feeling all those people around us.
And spoke to each person in that crowd at that moment.
And started taking the plywood off the towers?
And stepping into it. It's disgusting.
And superego battling it out on stage.
And take care of each other, it changed my life.
And that was the rave hangar.
And that was when they started to throw stuff at us for the first time.
And that's it.
And that's what Fred did. Like, he was out there moving them.
And that's what he did.
And the first thing I saw was a girl that looked maybe 15 or 16 years old,
And the humidity and the heat were so high that standing still,
And their skin was literally dry to the touch.
And then it turned out to be, like, I got to get out of here.
And then the only question became, like, what? When? Where?
And then you get into a mosh pit, and you get crowd surfed.
And then you hear, "Boo!"
And there was a guy in the back with her, who was putting his shorts back on.
And there was definitely chaos.
And there was plywood, and they're trying to rip it off.
And there's not enough security here to stop it.
And they don't breed.
And they were champions to the underdogs of the world.
And wanting to have this wonderful "Woodstock" experience?
And we had to walk, you know, probably a good half mile down the runway.
And we literally met the vehicle as it got halfway into the building.
And what I saw was incredibly frightening and shocking.
And what the real desires were.
And what's most important for everybody here,
And whether it was not having enough people, or just like,
And you can go like this, and they all… It's like you're an orchestra conductor.
And you could just see his eyes, they were glazed.
And you don't have enough infrastructure
And you're gonna break some shit?
And, to me, Limp Bizkit were the biggest draw
And, you know, getting a squeeze on your butt as they're passing you along.
And, you know, I was young. I was 14.
Are looking back at you,
Are you gonna be able to tear things up, drive them nuts, just go wild?
Are you ready to get this motherfucker going?
As a hungry young reporter,
As the sea sort of swallowed us up behind me.
At an awards ceremony than arriving at a festival.
At MTV.
At one point, this cute little hippie chick
At some point, someone approached me and asked what did that T shirt do for me.
At that moment, they were one of the biggest bands in the world.
At the Ritz Carlton.
At the Woodstock '99 music festival in Upstate New York.
At this point, things started going wrong.
Awesome. This right here is Woodstock '99 at its finest.
Because of whatever hallucinogenic or narcotics they were on.
Behind the scenes, the producers of this event were disorganized.
Best of luck to everyone here for no serious injuries tonight.
Budweiser beer. You're watching Woodstock '99!
Bunch of crazy motherfuckers out there.
But I was just vibrating like, "Oh my God."
But instead, he was riling up the crowd.
But no one had told me that there'd been any damage,
But then today, we're living in filth.
But then you have the id going, "Fuck, yeah! Let's do this!"
But there were a lot of women who voluntarily had their tops off.
But there's equally as many dudes, like, grabbing your boob
But this was literally like they did nothing.
But we just tried to put the van in neutral and get it out of the rave.
But you know what? That shit is over.
But you went over that wall and…
Can we get your reaction this morning on the outhouse facilities?
Come on! Yeah!
Come on. Back up on its end. On its end. This way.
Come on. Everybody, help out.
Could somebody have touched their breasts?
Dave Blaustein, ABC News.
Didn't mean much.
Disappointed!
During "Break Stuff" is when that hand grenade actually exploded.
Everybody in various states of undress and just high as balls.
Everybody was oblivious to what had just happened.
Everyone was enjoying themselves, but you could feel it.
Everyone's enjoying it.
Everything has come to expectations.
Everything was gone.
Everything was sponsored out of its mind.
Fatboy Slim is fucking fucking fucking…
Fatboy Slim is fucking in heaven.
Fatboy Slim is fucking in heaven. Fatboy Slim is fucking in heaven.
First thing I'm thinking is, like, "Holy shit. He's insane."
For heat exhaustion and dehydration
For me, it's money, and sex, and bitches, truthfully.
For security detail for Woodstock '99."
Fred could have quieted them down in a minute.
Fred Durst wasn't like a famous rock star.
Fred was riling up the crowd.
Fred, have you ever seen anything like that in your life?
Friday the 23rd was my 29th birthday.
From Detroit… Kid Rock!
From Woodstock '69 to Woodstock '99.
From Woodstock '69.
Fuck you.
Fucking hell. What a shambles.
Garbage cans were few and far between, it seemed,
He got up on one board, and he was trying to crowd surf himself.
He was enjoying it.
He was joining in.
He was like one of us. He wore DC shirts.
He was… He really wasn't present.
He wore a baseball hat backwards. And you could relate to him so much.
He would get people to do the craziest shit.
He's gyrating like Jack Sparrow with fleas.
Hello?
Hey, guys, give her some room. You're getting scary here.
Honestly, there was not enough security for 250,000 people.
Hot, beating, like, Lawrence of Arabia type sun beating down.
How many of you people here ever woke up one morning
How scary was it for you up there when they started ripping the place apart
How's it going? You look all happy. Things must be going very well.
I am going in.
I am in this pit speaking into my microphone,
I arrived on the Saturday in a stretch limo.
I can tell you, I've never done anything like that in my life.
I can't be looking at the crowd to see a rock that's coming at my head.
I can't feel my legs anymore.
I could see in their eyes. They weren't being overdramatic.
I decided to go to the rave hangar with a bunch of our production crew.
I did exactly as I was told and ran.
I didn't take into account what a jerk Fred Durst is.
I don't know if it was just a generational shift
I don't think you can blame Limp Bizkit for being Limp Bizkit.
I feel like we're watching a documentary on the Discovery Channel or something.
I follow them into the medical area,
I have to be looking at the tower.
I heard some reports that the women were pushed around.
I hope they've stocked up on their stretchers and their bandages.
I kept hearing how fans had been tearing walls apart.
I kind of feel weird.
I like chaos, and I like being at the heart of chaos.
I loved how, just, they didn't give a fuck. Period.
I mean, Friday, it had been very beautiful.
I mean, if it looks like the venue doesn't care, then why should you care?
I mean, it was peace and love.
I mean, nobody came thinking they were gonna stay
I mean, there was a lot of concrete.
I mean, there was so much happening on site,
I mean, they were the face of this corporate monolith
I mean, this is like triage. This is like warfare.
I mean, you know, it's Limp Bizkit is what it is.
I ran graffiti, chasing after girls,
I really thought, like, I was gonna die there at one point.
I remember hearing someone say, "Oh fuck. What is that?"
I remember seeing people banging their heads on the floor
I remember shining my flashlight into the corners,
I remember somebody screaming that there was a weapon.
I remember there was a really big thing that we all had to sign.
I said to myself, "Oh man, I'm done. I want to go home. I'm quitting."
I said to myself, "We're fucked."
I saw a girl get hit in the head with a glass bottle.
I saw blood on the ground. I saw somebody getting staples in their head.
I saw from the stage on one wall of the hangar,
I saw people getting IVs.
I saw several people just laying on cots, and their bodies almost looked lifeless.
I saw this as being a really great opportunity.
I think by that time, we all realized it wasn't Woodstock.
I think they're happy to see Limp Bizkit here.
I tried to go back to bed for an hour to try and kind of sleep it off.
I was 27 at the original Woodstock,
I was a huge fan of Limp Bizkit, and we were super excited to see them.
I was assigned to a tent that was right next to the stage.
I was floored. It just took the life out of me.
I was like, "Holy shit."
I was like, "Sure, I'm turning 29. Let's do this."
I went over to the production manager and said, "Fred, end of set."
I, and many of the other security guards,
I, uh, came up on the passenger side of the van,
I'd been closeted in my dressing room all afternoon with people just going,
I'd never pulled the plug in my life for any act ever.
I'll take it. I have another shirt in my bag.
I'm in the pit about 100 feet away from the stage.
I'm not holding back. I hate that sh
I'm not sure I could have done anything.
I'm not sure what happened to the guy in back of the van,
I'm sick of the Backstreet Boys on MTV Live. I'm sick of that [no audio].
I'm, like, not having fun no more.
I've been hit in the head with a Frisbee, a shoe.
If the first ring of hell were fun.
If they just showed us their penises, just get over with it.
If we left the trash on the ground.
If you can't sleep tonight, there's a rave right over there in the hangar.
In 1999, I was still 18 at that point.
In fairy wings came up to me.
In terms of why the young people were making this pilgrimage
In the late '90s, MTV was the embodiment of what the music industry became
In the production office, we started hearing tales
In youth culture, but they were done.
It didn't have that "peace and love,"
It felt like we were building up to something serious happening.
It is just nasty.
It must have been a fucking toaster oven.
It seems so well organized. It's so well put together.
It sort of felt a little bit more like walking down a red carpet
It took everything from us, our equipment, our materials, our supplies.
It was a hand grenade.
It was definitely intimidating.
It was hot where I was standing, and I didn't have anybody next to me,
It was just almost like a layer of trash that you had to shuffle through
It was just unhinged.
It was kind of a bold statement…
It was kind of like Fred understood what we were all going through
It was kind of like looking into the first ring of hell
It was laughable, you know?
It was like the scarcest thing on the planet,
It was like, an SOS went out from the sound tower guys.
It was like, you know, kids with yellow T shirts.
It was more about, "Buy my T shirt."
It was no longer about revolution.
It was one of those old, rusty machetes.
It was supposed to be Woodstock. Um…
It was the train off the tracks.
It was, like, really terrifying.
It was, like, the wildest thing.
It was… You know, what it was. It was just chaos.
It went from, "Oh, we're having a nice day."
It's a hundred degrees. They're standing on tarmac.
It's like a scene where zombies are coming over the castle walls.
It's like blaming a bear for being a bear.
It's like going into a bathroom and not flushing it for a whole year
It's not my fault. It's not my fault.
Joey McIntyre, "Stay the Same." You'd better go pick it up.
Jumped over the barricade to try to get to them to help them.
Just like this.
Kerosene, match. Boom.
Kid Rock comes out in this big fur coat.
Knowing it didn't do that. "Oh, does it get me backstage?"
Lack of respect from the attendees to the grounds.
Lack of respect from the promoters to us.
Lack of respect of men to women.
Let's just hope that some of them get hit between the legs,
Like a podium, with about 20 or 30 people on it.
Like all departments, the Sanitation Department had budget cuts.
Like, "Hey, it's all good."
Like, "Look at this. What a joke this is."
Like, I had never had those kind of hands, you know, in those places.
Like, my mom's gonna see me on the news, dead at Woodstock.
Like, there was no control.
Like, we represented something to them that they resented.
Limp Bizkit has gone offstage.
Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, Fatboy Slim.
Limp Bizkit!
Literally seeing people on all fours, having sex.
Look at his face. You can just see how hot it is.
Lots more drugs. Lots more alcohol.
Maybe these kids don't have enough love.
Maybe they're acting this way
Nightclubs, and all the festivities that came along with it.
None of these people were doing what they were supposed to from day one.
Now all of these people were coming to my facility
Now it's dangerous. And that's scary.
Now, everybody, get up!
Now, this is the point in your documentary
Of multiple breakdowns in the infrastructure around the festival.
Of the greatest rock festival of the decade.
Of what was allowed to play out the entire time we were there.
Oh my God. Dude, it's not our fault.
Oh!
Okay, fine, you're not going to get every piece of trash.
Okay, now people might be on day two of their multiday no sleep bender.
Okay? It says they don't give a fuck about you.
One minute everyone's standing around waiting for something to happen,
One person said to me,
Or else Fatboy cannot continue.
Or of the, you know, police state or whatever.
Party all night.
Peace and love equals capitalistic venture.
People are getting trampled, bloody heads.
People are now throwing hats and other things.
People were being brought out who were unconscious due to heatstroke,
People were trying desperately to find shade wherever they could.
Pointing the finger at Fred is about the last thing anybody should do.
Pushing people off of me, ducking out of the way.
Rambunctious and then out of hand.
Right behind me, past those heavily fortified gates you see,
Saturday night is when all hell really broke loose.
Saturday was the day everything started to fall apart.
Security at Woodstock '99 was kind of a joke.
Security, to their credit, they grab her and they bring her out.
See you in jail.
Seeing that girl in the van, that was a byproduct
Several naked people lined up with their hands up against the wall
She didn't know. She didn't know what she was gonna get into.
She was instrumental in getting all the food for the free kitchens.
She was like, "Hey, do you want some ecstasy?"
She was passed out.
Shit got crazy. And so, I mean, here comes Sunday.
Shit's kicking off, and it's kind of not safe.
So being an opportunist, I said, "This T shirt does anything you want."
So I became aware of what I thought
So I can only imagine the temperature within the pit.
So the security that we hired,
So the sound guys, they had actually hung a sign out there
So we're relying on all these subcontractors.
So you can just imagine in your mind how dangerous of a situation this was.
So, I strapped on all my gear and my walkie talkie, and like,
So, I took it upon myself to get a bunch of trash bags
So, I wanted to keep Woodstock '99 beautiful.
So, I went for the side door, slid the door open. It just opened.
So, there was a lot of anger and hostility building up.
Somebody looked like they had a broken leg.
Suck a fucking dick.
Suddenly, concertgoers were taking aim at us.
Supervisor security command.
That basically said, you know, "The Alamo" on it.
That ecstasy that I took four hours ago is now kicking in."
That in the midst of all those people having fun
That is just hideous to think
That my good friend Chris was at the sound tower.
That that was going on literally under our noses.
That there'd been any violence.
That was bastardizing their music.
That was literally the moment
That were making its way into the rave.
That were well appointed, we had chefs.
That's all I can say. It was amazing, man. It was phat.
That's going to venture into that mosh pit.
That's the artists' compound.
That's when my heart rate started pumping. I mean, it was scary.
The acts got treated great.
The band was going crazy, and the crowd was going crazy.
The best thing he could do is put on the best show possible.
The crowd was, like, undulating. They were almost one organism.
The fans of Limp Bizkit did not come from any elitist groups.
The kids are just getting gouged left and right.
The mosh pit was just like nothing I'd ever seen before.
The next minute, everyone's in the air.
The one, the only…
The rave probably established what the reality was of the audience,
The stagehand took her straight through the backstage,
The sun was burning,
The whole weekend, there was a lack of respect.
Then the next thing you know, you start getting some hands on top.
Then you start seeing heads, you know, people sort of pushing each other up.
There is no festival like Woodstock in the world.
There really isn't a way to control 300,000 people.
There was just the crush of 60,000 people.
There was really no place for you to get out of this situation, okay?
There was really only one place you could go to keep the party going.
There you go.
There you go. Let's call a spade a spade. Come on.
There's a place giving away Converse gear if you wanna blag some stuff.
There's hurt people here, and they're your brothers and sisters.
There's just adrenaline coming out of my ears.
There's not another reporter here
There's this little preamble. "How many of you people like NSYNC?"
They hadn't provided it.
They knew that we were live on air. They were fucking with us.
They said, "Let's go. We're evacuating." And then, yup, we just hauled ass.
They wanted the Woodstock spirit
They were not armed.
They were peace patrol.
They were properly rattled.
They're just sitting there with blinders on.
They're just… Pwong. Like so dilated. And I realize, "Holy shit,
They're paying, like, eight dollars for a burrito.
Things you might have not expected to go as well as they did.
This guy came up behind me and tried to burn my ass with a cigar.
This guy said, "Hey, I need to sign people up
This is a piece of art.
This little octagon here will get me a lot of places here at Woodstock '99.
This was not a walk in the park. I completely underestimated this event.
This was your average rock fan.
Those guys from the barricade came. They saw us.
Those things were just kind of the way that it was,
To get to the stage.
To spend the evening with me.
To support the number of people that are there…
To the logistical problems.
To the middle of New York.
To the rock fan, MTV VJs do not seem like one of them.
Totally pagan experience.
Trash bags for your area. Trash bags for your area.
Trash services and the sewage services were all farmed out.
Turn my guitar up loud, loud, loud.
Um, and she goes, "Well, I hate all men now."
Um…
Unfortunately, they did not do their jobs.
Until they were bleeding,
Walking up on stage, all I can think of is,
Was a kind of sort of floating dance platform,
We almost had to take a look behind our shoulders twice and go,
We are backstage at Woodstock '99 with three,
We could see how this is gonna go.
We didn't want anybody uniformed, or anybody carrying a gun.
We didn't want the influences of the government
We drove straight to an airport
We gotta close the door, man. Thanks a lot. Oh, I'm gonna be sick.
We gotta stop this. This is massively dangerous
We had tons and tons of dressing room trailers
We had worked a year to plan this.
We have to move the truck out of the venue,
We made our way down to the floor,
We met people from local neighborhoods in Brooklyn that we knew.
We start noticing people start banging against the plywood planks.
We were having fun.
We were just surrounded by a crowd that's completely off the rails.
We were, I don't know, ten guys on an island, right?
We're a little high.
We're at the barricade, right?
We're starting to feel like a target.
We're talking tens of thousands of people.
Well, I think the weather turned out to work very much in our favor.
Well, things are going very nicely. We're about halfway through.
What could I have done about it?
What does that say about the producers to a kid who's coming, paying their money
What look like very happy dudes, three kingpins.
What you're looking at right there."
What's coming up?
What's Woodstock mean to you guys?
When everything started to look a little less fun.
When it flashed into my head
Where the low drone comes in, and it's like…
Where's Waste Management?
Which Biblical word would you like for it?
Which turned out to be a van.
Who was… Literally had her shirt over her breasts,
Whoo!
Whoo!
Without fear of repercussions or consequences.
Woodstock '99!
Wow. These guys have really captured the spirit of Woodstock.
Yes, issues existed, but they were isolated.
Yes. I'm sure they did.
You are free to throw your plastic bottles when I start this record.
You could fucking feel the energy as you approached the hangar.
You could see Fred Durst's id, ego,
You could see the sound stage is, like, shaking.
You did not know what was gonna happen next.
You don't see anybody out there saying anything negative.

You got job problems?
You got Ossie Kilkenny, Michael Lang, John Scher.
